Fly High in the World’s First Hemp Airplane
(Alcohol, Cannabis, Hemp, Hemp, Inc., New York, Organic, Production, Research, United States, THC, Cultivation) The sky is the limit for the benefits of the hemp plant. The hemp airplane might be poised to change a problematic industry. While it’s a necessity for much of the population and the integrity of global economies, the aviation industry is one of the biggest polluters out there. Even as aircraft become more fuel-efficient, the demand continues to outstrip the benefits. According to a report from the International Council on Clean Transportation (2018), the demand for air travel is increasing 1.5 times faster than U.N. estimates. In an industry that’s responsible for 2.4 percent of the world’s emissions, this growth is a significant contributor to climate change. But, as big a polluter as air travel may be, it isn’t going anywhere. These alarming stats merely push many entrepreneurially-minded individuals to look for ever-more efficient alternatives in how the aviation industry moves forward. For one Canadian based company, the next evolution in aviation is the hemp airplane. Taking...

We’ll continue to update as regulators announce new policies. So far, during the COVID-19 pandemic, cannabis sales are through the roof as consumers stock up in anticipation of supply chain disruption. But, despite this upswing, cannabis companies are bracing for impact. As Cannabis Wire reported this week, a dilemma has hit the nascent industry: to close or not to close? Already, Canopy Growth chose to close nearly two dozen shops in Canada, and we’re tracking how other companies are reacting. But what happens in the case of forced closures? Cannabis regulators will have to weigh tough decisions in the coming days as businesses, from gyms to bowling alleys to bars, are asked to close as part of broader efforts to contain the spread of the virus. (While Canadian consumers can legally order cannabis online, should closures occur, changes are taking place north of the border. On...

(Cannabis, Education, Events, Growing, Hemp, Media, New York, Regulations, Social Media, United States) Looks like from head honcho Chris Walsh down they are looking at ways to be something else after being a conference company for the past 2/3 years . How they reinvent themselves as a publisher, information provider and lead generator will, we suggest, be much harder when the events revenue pot simmers down. Also, we aren’t sure this is the best analogy in the time of virus ! “Aside from our flagship events, we are working feverishly to create new virtual gatherings.” This is what the boss says. Declaring CB ‘essential’ marks a watershed moment in history
(California, Cannabis, Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, Medical Marijuana, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Stocks, United States, Washington, Dispensaries) Declaring CB ‘essential’ marks a watershed moment in history The COVID-19 pandemic has forced government officials to make life-or-death decisions about which goods and services are essential, and which are not. Essential businesses stay open; those not on the list must close to the public. In state after state, and province after province, regulators have declared medical marijuana essential. This is a watershed moment worth noting. In California, New York, Washington, Illinois, Massachusetts, Colorado, Nevada, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, governors have closed non-essential businesses, but specifically allowed medical (and sometimes adult-use) cannabis dispensaries to remain open. NY State Catholic Conference Firmly Opposed To Cannabis Legalization
(Cannabis, Development, Education, Law, Legalization, Medical Marijuana, New York, Recreational, Regulations, Science, United States) The New York State Catholic Conference on Monday indicated its opposition to a bill that would legalize the sale and use of recreational marijuana. “New York’s medical, education and law enforcement communities have urged the state to reject recreational marijuana legalization, and so does the New York State Catholic Conference,” the conference said in a March 23 memo. The Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act is currently in committee, and has been supported by Gov. Andrew Cuomo as part of his proposed budget. The governor has said it would generate $300 million in tax revenue. “There are many policy issues that I laid out back in January and we’re going to pursue all of them,” he said, according to The Post-Star. Medical marijuana has been legal in New York since 2014. The Catholic conference noted that the state is now “in the grips of the coronavirus pandemic, and said that “it would be the height of irresponsibility for the state to legalize a substance designed to be inhaled...

The 2018 Farm Bill gives the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulatory authority over hemp cultivation at the federal level. In turn, states have the option to maintain primary regulatory authority over the crop cultivated within their borders by submitting a plan to the USDA. This federal and state interplay has resulted in many legislative and regulatory changes at the state level. Indeed, most states have introduced (and adopted) bills that would authorize the commercial production of hemp within their borders. A smaller but growing number of states also regulate the sale of products derived from hemp. In light of these legislative changes, we are presenting a 50-state series analyzing how each jurisdiction treats hemp-...

The poll , conducted by YouGov earlier this week, asked nearly 5,400 Americans whether medical marijuana dispensaries should be considered “essential services” or not. Slightly over half (53 percent) of all respondents agreed that access to medical marijuana was essential, and only 26 percent said that dispensaries should not be considered essential. A further 21 percent were undecided on the matter. As is often the case with cannabis-related polls , younger and more liberal respondents were more likely to be in favor of keeping dispensaries open. Between 54 and 59 percent of respondents between the ages of 18 and 54 agreed that medical marijuana is an essential service, but only 47 percent of those over 55 felt the same way. Democrats were also more likely (62 percent) to agree than independents (52 percent) or Republicans (43 percent...

Coronavirus Delays: Where Do Cannabis Bills Stand Across the US?
(Advertising, Alabama, Canada, Cannabis, CBD, Connecticut, Edibles, Kentucky, Law, Legalization, Medical Marijuana, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Research, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, United States, Vermont, Cultivation) As 2020 kicked off, advocates were pushing for cannabis law reform along the two main tracks: ballot and bill. But just as the signature gathering geared up in anticipation of the November election, and lawmakers were deep in debates, the coronavirus outbreak hit the United States. Now, state governors, lawmakers, and other officials have shifted their energy toward flattening the curve. Whether this spells delay or demise for certain cannabis reform efforts in 2020 remains unknown. Cannabis Wire has reached out to the sponsors of major medical and adult use legislation to see where things stand. Here’s what they had to say. (Editor’s note: There are hundreds of pieces of more incremental cannabis legislation, addressing everything from taxes to advertising, but Cannabis Wire is focusing on bills that would bring, for example, medical or adult use sales to a state for the first time.) ALABAMA Senate Bill 165 would legalize medical cannabis sales; currently, state law allows only for...

Dispensaries to Stay Open as Denver Undergoes ‘Stay at Home’ Order
(Arizona, California, Cannabis, Illinois, New York, Recreational, United States, Dispensaries) By Associated Press (AP) — Denver has issued a “stay at home” order limiting most people to going out only for essentials such as groceries, medication and exercise as officials try to slow the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). Under the order from Mayor Michael Hancock, businesses that are not considered “essential” must be closed until at least April 10. The closures initially included liquor stores and recreational marijuana shops, but Hancock later amended the order to allow those businesses to remain open as long “extreme physical distancing” is in place. Residents flocked to liquor stores and marijuana dispensaries and queued in long lines shortly after Hancock issued the initial order. States such as California, Illinois and New York have implemented “stay at home” orders to curb the coronavirus pandemic. These states have also deemed marijuana dispensaries as essential, thus allowing them to remain open along with other essential businesses such as pharmacies, banks, and...

But, they have not been disclosing details required by Canadian law about who they employ to come up with the pay formulas and how much these consultants are paid. A review of Canadian public filings by Cannabis Law Report has found at least three publicly traded companies who have failed to be transparent in telling shareholders how much they were actually paying their executives. It appears that some packages could be described as “over-compensation” and were / are making some individuals very wealthy. Compensation consultants are often required by boards of publicly traded companies to enable an independent outside party to come up with a realistic approach to how the CEO and also key management are compensated thus stopping companies using internal resources to pull any old figure or package out of thin air. Oregon Drug Decriminalization And Treatment Campaign Impacted By Coronavirus
(California, Cannabis, Exploring, Legalization, Medical Marijuana, Nebraska, New York, Oregon, Recreational, South Dakota, United States, Washington) Another drug policy reform campaign has suspended signature gathering amid the coronavirus. This time, Oregon activists hoping to put a drug decriminalization and substance misuse treatment initiative on the state’s November ballot announced that they have ended in-person signature collections for the time being. But the campaign stressed there are other means for supportive voters to help qualify the measure. The Drug Addiction Treatment and Recovery Act places an emphasis on expanding drug treatment programs through the use of funds derived from existing marijuana tax revenues. At the same time, it would promote treating drug addiction as a health issue by decriminalizing illegal substances. Low-level possession would instead be considered a civil infraction punishable by a maximum $100 fine and no jail time. Since signatures can’t be collected in person, the campaign is urging residents to visit their website, enter their contact information, download the petition and mail it back...

Psychedelics Advocates Fight to Keep Ballot Initiatives Alive During Pandemic
(California, Cannabis, Consulting, Legalization, Media, Medical Marijuana, Nebraska, New York, Oregon, Social Media, United States, Washington, Washington DC) Two major psychedelics reform advocacy groups in Oregon and California are struggling to keep their ballot initiatives alive amidst coronavirus quarantine. In Oregon, activists have been collecting signatures for the Psilocybin Services Initiative (IP34), a ballot measure to fully legalize psilocybin for psychedelic-assisted therapy. If passed, this initiative would allow licensed businesses to produce psilocybin mushrooms, which could be legally used by adults under medical supervision. Activists managed to collect nearly 128,000 signatures before “shelter-in-place” measures came into effect. Oregon only requires 112,020 valid signatures to place a measure on a general election ballot, but activists were hoping to collect an additional 15,000 signatures in order to ensure that their measure is a success. Before any measure can be approved, state officials must verify every single signature on the ballot, and in most cases, thousands of signatures are ruled as invalid. For this reason...

Massachusetts Reinforces Support for the Medical Necessity Model
(California, Cannabis, Cannabis and Hemp, Development, Education, Facilities, GSML, Hemp, Hemp Industries, Illinois, Law, Management, Massachusetts, Medical Marijuana, Michigan, New York, Recreational, Regulations, Science, Testing, United States, Washington, Dispensaries, Cultivation, Intellectual Property) As more and more states are shifting to a work-from-home environment and closing down non-essential businesses, we have seen a conflict in gubernatorial instructions on whether cannabis is a protected class of business that falls under “essential infrastructure” or “essential business.” Earlier this week, we compared the approach New York and California have taken to permitting businesses to continue to operate. The former, medical-only state received a carte blanche endorsement as an essential business in New York to provide (often immunocompromised) patients with necessary medication. California, on the other hand, remained silent in executive orders, and left it up to local mayoral representatives to make determinations as they saw fit and best for their respective communities. Massachusetts has taken a middle road, as Governor Charles D. Baker issued COVID-19 Order No. 13 on March 23, 2020 which becomes effective March 24, 2020 at noon. This order identified an extensive list of “...

Americans Want Medical Marijuana Dispensaries To Stay Open As ‘Essential Services,’ Poll Finds
(California, Cannabis, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Medical Marijuana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Products, Recreational, South Dakota, United States, Washington, Dispensaries) A majority of Americans believe that medical cannabis dispensaries should be kept open as “essential services” amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new poll. The survey asked simply: “Do you believe medical marijuana dispensaries should or should not be considered essential services?” Fifty-three percent said the cannabis providers should be regarded as essential, 26 percent said they shouldn’t and 21 percent said they didn’t know. YouGov. As state governments across the country grapple with the COVID-19 outbreak, officials have had to make difficult decisions about which businesses are critical enough to remain open and which should be forced to temporarily shut down. Many states have also given the “essential” designation to recreational...
