Cookies Crush
(Branding, California, Canada, Cannabis, Clothing, Education, Florida, Genetics, Grower, Growing, Jamaica, Law, Magazines, Maryland, Media, Michigan, Production, Regulations, Social Media, Strains, United States, Dispensaries) Nothing cannabis-related in the last 10 years found its way into our hearts, blunts and closets quite like Cookies. Even in the earliest days of transition from the medical space to the adult-use marketplace, Cookies was the most well-branded company in the cannabis industry. Today, in a world where PR people are desperate to create the kind of movement Berner’s business savvy and Jigga’s genetics have ignited, nothing else really comes close in the connoisseur space. Every step in the process of Cookies’ rise had its own wild amount of hype. In the late 2000s, the Girl Scout Cookies strain , called Cookies for short, became the most sought-after new strain in the world. Then, as the second decade of the century kicked off, Cookies became the must-have cannabis clothing brand , moving from social media to storefronts. Today, Cookies as a legal marijuana company is using its branding savvy to take the multi-pronged business even further into the future. From its humble beginning as a...

We’ll continue to update as regulators announce new policies. So far, during the COVID-19 pandemic, cannabis sales are through the roof as consumers stock up in anticipation of supply chain disruption. But, despite this upswing, cannabis companies are bracing for impact. As Cannabis Wire reported this week, a dilemma has hit the nascent industry: to close or not to close? Already, Canopy Growth chose to close nearly two dozen shops in Canada, and we’re tracking how other companies are reacting. But what happens in the case of forced closures? Cannabis regulators will have to weigh tough decisions in the coming days as businesses, from gyms to bowling alleys to bars, are asked to close as part of broader efforts to contain the spread of the virus. (While Canadian consumers can legally order cannabis online, should closures occur, changes are taking place north of the border. On...

Declaring CB ‘essential’ marks a watershed moment in history
(California, Cannabis, Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, Medical Marijuana, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Stocks, United States, Washington, Dispensaries) Declaring CB ‘essential’ marks a watershed moment in history The COVID-19 pandemic has forced government officials to make life-or-death decisions about which goods and services are essential, and which are not. Essential businesses stay open; those not on the list must close to the public. In state after state, and province after province, regulators have declared medical marijuana essential. This is a watershed moment worth noting. In California, New York, Washington, Illinois, Massachusetts, Colorado, Nevada, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, governors have closed non-essential businesses, but specifically allowed medical (and sometimes adult-use) cannabis dispensaries to remain open. The 2018 Farm Bill gives the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulatory authority over hemp cultivation at the federal level. In turn, states have the option to maintain primary regulatory authority over the crop cultivated within their borders by submitting a plan to the USDA. This federal and state interplay has resulted in many legislative and regulatory changes at the state level. Indeed, most states have introduced (and adopted) bills that would authorize the commercial production of hemp within their borders. A smaller but growing number of states also regulate the sale of products derived from hemp. In light of these legislative changes, we are presenting a 50-state series analyzing how each jurisdiction treats hemp-...

Most Americans Want Medical Cannabis Dispensaries to Stay Open During Lockdown
(Alcohol, Arizona, California, Cannabis, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Legalization, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Medical Marijuana, Mexico, Michigan, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, United States, Washington, Dispensaries) Most Americans believe that states should not restrict access to legal medical cannabis during “shelter-in-place” measures, according to a new poll . The poll , conducted by YouGov earlier this week, asked nearly 5,400 Americans whether medical marijuana dispensaries should be considered “essential services” or not. Slightly over half (53 percent) of all respondents agreed that access to medical marijuana was essential, and only 26 percent said that dispensaries should not be considered essential. A further 21 percent were undecided on the matter. As is often the case with cannabis-related polls , younger and more liberal respondents were more likely to be in favor of keeping dispensaries open. Between 54 and 59 percent of respondents between the ages of 18 and 54 agreed that medical marijuana is an essential service, but only 47 percent of those over 55 felt the same way. Democrats were also more likely (62 percent) to agree than independents (52 percent) or Republicans (43 percent...

The No-Till Revolution
(California, Cannabis, CBD, Fertilizer, Food, Genetics, Grower, Growing, Israel, Michigan, Recreational, Strains, United States, Recreational Cannabis, Soil) Josh Khankhanian walks barefoot through his Mendocino cannabis farm, pulling up pointed dark green leaves of comfrey and dropping them back on the soil. It’s the first day of October, which is an active time at any outdoor cannabis farm, but Khankhanian exudes an air of lucid calm as he decides which plants should be harvested today at Moon Gazer Farms . Khankhanian’s walk takes him through tangled rows of beautiful cannabis in full flower, nestled around other plants, flowers and herbs. Comfrey, Jerusalem artichokes, bergamot, bog sage, holy basil, kale, fava beans, calendula and torch tithonia (also known as Mexican sunflower) all find a place among the farm’s raised soil mounds. “Diversity is the big thing here, that’s why we have a lot of diverse kinds of plants,” Khankhanian tells me as we walk through the garden. “But even within the cannabis [on our farm], it’s as diverse as it can be. When you plant from seed, every plant is different.” PHOTO Claire Weissbluth Moon Gazer Farms...

Massachusetts Reinforces Support for the Medical Necessity Model
(California, Cannabis, Cannabis and Hemp, Development, Education, Facilities, GSML, Hemp, Hemp Industries, Illinois, Law, Management, Massachusetts, Medical Marijuana, Michigan, New York, Recreational, Regulations, Science, Testing, United States, Washington, Dispensaries, Cultivation, Intellectual Property) As more and more states are shifting to a work-from-home environment and closing down non-essential businesses, we have seen a conflict in gubernatorial instructions on whether cannabis is a protected class of business that falls under “essential infrastructure” or “essential business.” Earlier this week, we compared the approach New York and California have taken to permitting businesses to continue to operate. The former, medical-only state received a carte blanche endorsement as an essential business in New York to provide (often immunocompromised) patients with necessary medication. California, on the other hand, remained silent in executive orders, and left it up to local mayoral representatives to make determinations as they saw fit and best for their respective communities. Massachusetts has taken a middle road, as Governor Charles D. Baker issued COVID-19 Order No. 13 on March 23, 2020 which becomes effective March 24, 2020 at noon. This order identified an extensive list of “...

It is a decline of 14.28% from the previous quarter because of sluggish demand for its vape hardware products. (Cannabis, Illinois, Law, Louisiana, Medical Marijuana, Michigan, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, Regulations, Tracking, United States, Washington, Dispensaries) Mar 20, 2020 Governors and legislative leaders urged to preserve and ensure cannabis access amid social distancing Washington, D.C. — In response to escalating efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19 by social distancing, the Marijuana Policy Project and other organizations have released an open letter urging governors and legislative leaders to take necessary actions to ensure continued safe access to cannabis in a way that is consistent with public health. In states with legal medical cannabis, the letter recommends state leaders declare medical cannabis businesses “essential,” allow medical cannabis delivery, online ordering, and curbside delivery, ensure individuals are allowed to consult with physicians by telemedicine, and extend the expiration date of medical cannabis cards until after the crisis has abated, among other recommended actions. Out of Any State, Michigan Is Tweeting the Most About Weed During Coronavirus
(California, Cannabis, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Media, Michigan, Oregon, Recreational, Social Media, Software, Texas, United States, Dispensaries) As cities across the country continue to enact shelter-in-place measures and social distancing guidelines in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, legal weed dispensaries from California to Massachusetts have seen huge lines and skyrocketing sales . But once cannabis users are back home, one state in particular has seen a higher bump in pot posts on social media. According to MLive , a new social media study from the health blog bodynutrition.org found that Michigan residents have posted the most cannabis photos, slang, jokes, and general 420-friendly banter since the coronavirus quarantines started. Researchers used trends software to track geotagged Twitter posts about weed and weed-related terms, and found more than 200,000 tweets from the Wolverine State since March 1st. These included hashtags and usage of phrases like "smoke weed," as well as other sativa-friendly semantics. Delivery Services Rapidly Increase Sales During Coronavirus Outbreak
(California, Cannabis, Delivery Systems, Medical Marijuana, Michigan, Nevada, Products, United States, Dispensaries) TILT Holdings’ Blackbird technology powers cannabis delivery services in California and Nevada, where the states’ governors have deemed the industry “essential” and open for business—with some caveats. Certain dispensaries may now only permit medical cannabis patients in the store, for instance. Much of the market, then, has quickly flipped over to delivery and pickup orders.Tim Conder, TILT Holdings COO, says that Blackbird data shows a 400% increase from one week to the next, citing sales numbers from mid-March—just as the coronavirus outbreak was settling the U.S. into widespread shelter-in-place dictates.

How Can You Access Legal Weed via Delivery (or Otherwise) During Coronavirus?
(Alaska, California, Cannabis, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, JUSHF, Jushi, Maine, Manufacturing, Massachusetts, Medical Marijuana, Michigan, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Organic, Pennsylvania, Products, Recreational, Regulations, United States, Vermont, Washington, Dispensaries, Recreational Cannabis, Cultivation) At 6pm on Monday, March 16th, the line of patients waiting to purchase cannabis at a popular Berkeley, California dispensary stretched 40 people deep . Normally, such a sight would be cause for celebration, but in the midst of a global pandemic , the optics were a snapshot of the issues faced by cannabis operators in a time of self-quarantine.
