Panic Buying May Not Save the Weed Industry, After All
(California, Canada, Cannabis, China, Colorado, Drinks, Edibles, Facilities, Growing, Loans, Nevada, Production, Products, Recreational, United States, Washington) Image via The regulated marijuana industry recently experienced record-breaking sales while everyone stocked up weed, but the heady hoarding triggered by COVID-19 lockdowns may not be enough to save pot businesses from a potential economic recession. Already, sales figures have slumped back down to their typical year-over-year numbers in some weed-legal states. According to data from the weed analytics firm Headset, sales spiked from March 15-16, just as the US began to (rightfully) freak out over the coronavirus pandemic. Sales then rapidly declined from March 17-19, with a slight uptick in sales on March 20, a Friday. “The response might mark a natural decline after consumers stocked up before sheltering in place,” wrote Maggie Cowee at MJBizDaily regarding last week’s figures, “or it could be the result of economic pressures from the pandemic, which has resulted in the closure of restaurants, gyms, ski resorts, and scores of other businesses, as well as the loss of thousands of...

Dispensaries saw the biggest sales day of the year after Denver’s initial stay-at-home order looked to close them
(Cannabis, Colorado, Products, Recreational, United States, Dispensaries) 3/25/20–When Denver Mayor Michael Hancock announced recreational marijuana shops would be forced to close under the city’s stay-at-home order Monday, the response from customers was swift. They swarmed local dispensaries to stock up on products and caused enough of a stir that the mayor rescinded the moratorium just three hours later. Colorado Gov. Jared Polis deemed marijuana dispensaries “critical” retail businesses, meaning they’re allowed to remain open during the coronavirus pandemic with some restrictions, and on Monday, Denver dispensaries saw their biggest sales day of the year so far. Most Americans Want Medical Cannabis Dispensaries to Stay Open During Lockdown
(Alcohol, Arizona, California, Cannabis, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Legalization, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Medical Marijuana, Mexico, Michigan, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, United States, Washington, Dispensaries) Most Americans believe that states should not restrict access to legal medical cannabis during “shelter-in-place” measures, according to a new poll . The poll , conducted by YouGov earlier this week, asked nearly 5,400 Americans whether medical marijuana dispensaries should be considered “essential services” or not. Slightly over half (53 percent) of all respondents agreed that access to medical marijuana was essential, and only 26 percent said that dispensaries should not be considered essential. A further 21 percent were undecided on the matter. As is often the case with cannabis-related polls , younger and more liberal respondents were more likely to be in favor of keeping dispensaries open. Between 54 and 59 percent of respondents between the ages of 18 and 54 agreed that medical marijuana is an essential service, but only 47 percent of those over 55 felt the same way. Democrats were also more likely (62 percent) to agree than independents (52 percent) or Republicans (43 percent...

We’ll continue to update as regulators announce new policies. So far, during the COVID-19 pandemic, cannabis sales are through the roof as consumers stock up in anticipation of supply chain disruption. But, despite this upswing, cannabis companies are bracing for impact. As Cannabis Wire reported this week, a dilemma has hit the nascent industry: to close or not to close? Already, Canopy Growth chose to close nearly two dozen shops in Canada, and we’re tracking how other companies are reacting. But what happens in the case of forced closures? Cannabis regulators will have to weigh tough decisions in the coming days as businesses, from gyms to bowling alleys to bars, are asked to close as part of broader efforts to contain the spread of the virus. (While Canadian consumers can legally order cannabis online, should closures occur, changes are taking place north of the border. On...

Youth Marijuana Treatment Admissions Fell After Legalization, Study Finds
(Alcohol, Cannabis, Colorado, Facilities, Law, Legalization, Medical Marijuana, Recreational, Research, United States, Washington, Dispensaries) Does legalizing marijuana for adults lead to a tidal wave of teens going to treatment? Not according to a new study out of Temple University, where researchers in fact found decreases in youth admission rates for problem cannabis use in two legal states. The findings, published this month in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence, run counter to speculation from legalization opponents, law enforcement and some public health experts, who have warned that relaxing cannabis laws could lead to an explosion in cannabis use disorders among children. If that’s happening, the study found, treatment admissions data so far show no sign of it. Examining data from publicly funded substance use treatment facilities, researchers from Temple’s geography and urban studies department, found that youth treatment admissions rates for cannabis use disorder fell sharply between 2008 and 2017, nationally as well as in Colorado and Washington State, which both passed legalization laws in 2012. “Our results...

Americans Want Medical Marijuana Dispensaries To Stay Open As ‘Essential Services,’ Poll Finds
(California, Cannabis, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Medical Marijuana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Products, Recreational, South Dakota, United States, Washington, Dispensaries) A majority of Americans believe that medical cannabis dispensaries should be kept open as “essential services” amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new poll. The survey asked simply: “Do you believe medical marijuana dispensaries should or should not be considered essential services?” Fifty-three percent said the cannabis providers should be regarded as essential, 26 percent said they shouldn’t and 21 percent said they didn’t know. YouGov. As state governments across the country grapple with the COVID-19 outbreak, officials have had to make difficult decisions about which businesses are critical enough to remain open and which should be forced to temporarily shut down. In many states with legal cannabis—including California, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts and New Jersey—officials have determined that medical marijuana dispensaries are, in fact, essential services that can continue to operate. Many states have also given the “essential” designation to recreational...

What Is Blue Dream, and What Makes the Weed Strain So Popular?
(California, Cannabis, Colorado, Food, Marketing, Strains, United States, Dispensaries) If you smoke weed, then you’ve probably puffed Blue Dream at least once. If you haven’t, trust me: At some point in your cannabis consuming career, you probably will. Blue Dream, unlike other legendary cannabis strains such as Chem Dog , has no documented history, and, as far as we know, no verifiable oral history, either. There’s no cool story detailing how Blue Dream evolved from seed to icon. According to most sources , Blue Dream likely originated somewhere in Northern California as a cross between a Blueberry plant (a legendary strain in its own right) and a Haze plant (another legend, but not one you see so much these days). Of course, no one knows for sure if Blue Dream actually came from Blueberry and Haze parents, but it makes for one really catchy — and fitting — strain name. How to Identify Blue Dream Genuine Blue Dream buds should be relatively dense and bell-shaped, though smaller ones may come in the popcorn variety . One whiff of it should immediately remind someone of...

Federal Drug Possession Cases Fell 28% in 2019, New Data Reveals
(Cannabis, Colorado, Recreational, United States, Washington) Federal cases for possession of all drug types fell considerably in 2019 compared to previous years, according to an announcement by the US Sentencing Commission on Monday. The announcement follows the commission’s release of its annual report, which summarizes data regarding federal crime cases, sentencing guidelines, and boring budget stuff. The US Sentencing Commission noted on Twitter that federal courts saw a 28 percent reduction in drug possession cases in 2019 compared to 2018. In fact, of all the crime categories, drug possession fell the most. The largest decreases were seen in drug possession (-28%); money laundering offenses (- 9%); and fraud, theft, and embezzlement (-4%) offenses.— SentencingCommission (@TheUSSCgov) March 23, 2020 The commission’s annual report shows that methamphetamine , not marijuana, was the federal court system’s primary drug offender in 2019. Cases related to meth made up nearly half — or 44 percent — of all drug cases last year. Meanwhile, weed has...

GOP Senator Says Marijuana Industry Is Stepping Up To Help With Coronavirus Response
(Banking, Cannabis, Colorado, GSML, Hemp, Hemp Industries, Legalization, New York, United States) A Republican senator said in a floor speech on Wednesday that the marijuana and hemp industries in Colorado are helping the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO), who returned to the Senate following a 14-day self-quarantine after being informed he came into contact with someone infected with the virus, said residents in his state “have stepped up in every way possible.” “In a uniquely Colorado way, you have hemp businesses that are now producing cotton swabs for medical needs. You have whiskey distilleries that are producing hand sanitizers for hospitals for home health care,” he said. “We have protective equipment that’s being donated by the Denver Broncos and by marijuana industry and by so many other businesses across the state of Colorado who are stepping up in ways that make all of us proud.” While Gardner didn’t offer specifics about which companies are behind these contributions, health experts have emphasized that there are significant shortages of...

Weed Shoppers Are Buying More Edibles and Fewer Pre-Rolls During Quarantine
(California, Cannabis, Colorado, Edibles, Medical Marijuana, Products, United States, Washington, Dispensaries) The legal weed industry has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, and businesses are being forced to adapt to rapidly-changing circumstances in order to remain solvent. Although some states have decided to shut down adult-use weed stores entirely , several states have recognized that pot retailers, particuarly medical marijuana dispensaries, are “ essential businesses ," and are allowing them to stay open during the quarantine. Nonetheless, retailers have been forced to change their methods of doing business . Some states have imposed strict limitations on how employees can interact with customers, while others are forcing stores to sell via home delivery only. The pandemic is also altering weed customers' buying habits, according to a new report by Marijuana Business Daily . Based on point-of-sale data collected by cannabis data firm Headset, sales of edibles surged rapidly last week, when state governors began announcing business closures and “ shelter-in-place ” orders. (Cannabis, Colorado, Compliance, Facilities, Law, Massachusetts, Media, New Jersey, New York, Regulations, Regulatory Compliance, Retail Stores, Social Media, United States, Websites, Dispensaries, Cultivation) Recent coronavirus response measures in Denver and Colorado have been keeping attorney Alyson Jaen’s attention lately as the industry works to maintain compliance. At 5 p.m. MDT on March 24, Denver’s stay-at-home order went into effect in response to the coronavirus. The previous day, Mayor Michael Hancock said adult-use businesses and liquor stores are nonessential, but reversed course a few hours later after an “outcry” and let the businesses remain open, according to The New York Times .Facing orders to stay in their homes and the possibility of not being able to purchase product when they do leave their homes, demand among adult-use customers increased 140% on March 23 before the mayor said adult-use businesses are essential, said Jaen, who is head of Denver-based Fortis Law Partners’ cannabis practice.“It was in a matter of hours [that] we had a huge pivot—'Yes, you're open,' 'No, you're not.’” she said. “That creates confusion and this idea of panic-buying.”Previously, on March...

What Is Weed Wine and How Do You Make the Infused Alcohol?
(Alcohol, Beverage, California, Cannabis, CBD, Colorado, Edibles, Food, Greece, Grower, Investing, Legalization, Products, Record Keeping, Regulations, Strains, United States, Wine, THC, Dispensaries) In this era of cannabis prosperity, cannabis-infused edibles and beverages are no longer relegated to space cakes, magic brownies, and murky tinctures. Rather, cannabis consumers today are blessed with an epicurean food-and-weed scene worthy of Zagat, as chefs across the country regularly whip up inspired dishes full of THC, CBD, and terpenes. But what if we told you one of the weed world’s favorite new infused offerings wasn’t really new at all, and has actually been around since the second century A.D.? And what if we told you that you could make your own batch at home? Well get familiar with weed wine, an infused beverage that many are experimenting with across the cannabis landscape. What Is Weed Wine? When we think of wine, we’re almost always talking about boozy, fermented grape juice. Sure, you can make wine out of blueberries, watermelons, and other fruit, but when was the last time you actually bought some sweet berry vino ? As such, most weed wines are made from grapes,...

While drug cases still represent the second most common category of crimes in the federal criminal justice system, the data indicates that the bulk of those instances are related to methamphetamine trafficking, which has steadily increased over the past decade. But for marijuana, a different kind of trend has emerged. As more states have moved to legalize cannabis, federal prosecutions have consistently declined since 2012 . To illustrate the shift, marijuana trafficking cases represented the most common drug type that was pursued in 2012, with about 7,000 cases. As of fiscal year 2019, those cases are now the second least common, with fewer than 2,000 cases. Notably, the year of that peak, 2012, was when Colorado and Washington State became the first to legalize for...

Out of Any State, Michigan Is Tweeting the Most About Weed During Coronavirus
(California, Cannabis, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Media, Michigan, Oregon, Recreational, Social Media, Software, Texas, United States, Dispensaries) As cities across the country continue to enact shelter-in-place measures and social distancing guidelines in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, legal weed dispensaries from California to Massachusetts have seen huge lines and skyrocketing sales . But once cannabis users are back home, one state in particular has seen a higher bump in pot posts on social media. According to MLive , a new social media study from the health blog bodynutrition.org found that Michigan residents have posted the most cannabis photos, slang, jokes, and general 420-friendly banter since the coronavirus quarantines started. Researchers used trends software to track geotagged Twitter posts about weed and weed-related terms, and found more than 200,000 tweets from the Wolverine State since March 1st. These included hashtags and usage of phrases like "smoke weed," as well as other sativa-friendly semantics. Michigan’s adult-use cannabis dispensaries didn’t open for business until December of last year , but in the...

The Cannabis Retail Spike Was Short Lived
(California, Cannabis, Colorado, Recreational, Retail Stores, United States, Washington) MJ Biz writes…………Adult-use marijuana sales plunged over the weekend, only a few days after skyrocketing to new heights as consumers prepared for fallout from coronavirus. The response might mark a natural decline after consumers stocked up before sheltering in place or it could be the result of economic pressures from the pandemic, which has resulted in the closure of restaurants, gyms, ski resorts and scores of other businesses as well as the loss of thousands of jobs. On March 2, recreational marijuana sales in California, Colorado and Washington state were all up over the same time period in 2019, from a modest 8% increase in Colorado to a whopping 88% in California. These increases followed previous seasonal trends for March, which often see a year-over-year uptick in sales. By March 9, sales in the three states had surged , with year-over-year sales increases of 46% in Colorado, 100% in Washington state and an eye-popping 159% in California. But by March 21, sales had slowed in...
