These Marijuana Stocks May Have a Better Chance Than Most
(California, Canada, Cannabis, IIPR, Innovative Industrial Properties, Investments, Investors, Regulations, Stocks, United States) Marijuana stocks have been extremely volatile over the course of the past month or two. This volatility extends back even further, but the real fluctuations from the coronavirus, have only taken effect in the past month or so. While some investors tend to learn toward pot stocks with higher rates of fluctuations, others may be less inclined to invest in more volatile companies. Currently, we are seeing a lot of trading that illustrates one major factor in the current market. That factor is fear. Many investors are trading off of fear as it is extremely difficult to tell where the industry will be even in the next two weeks. [Read More] Will Pot Stocks Be Saved By Cannabis Cultivators? With that being said, there are a few things we can do as investors to give ourselves the best shot at success. For one, we can use this time to begin working out a greater strategy for future trading. With all of the time on our hands, now may be a better time than ever to rethink how we trade marijuana...

Illinois Sold Even More Weed in March Than February, Despite COVID-19 Lockdown
(California, Cannabis, Illinois, Indiana, Law, Massachusetts, Medical Marijuana, Netherlands, Nevada, Products, Regulations, United States, Dispensaries) Cannabis sales in Illinois have soared since the Prairie State legalized adult-use weed sales in January . The state's legal weed market seems so robust, in fact, that the coronavirus pandemic isn't even slowing it down. Last month, even as state and local governments ordered residents to remain in their homes, demand for legal weed remained strong. According to a preliminary report from the state Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, adult-use shops sold more than 812,000 legal weed products in March, amounting to nearly $36 million in total sales. “Three straight months of consistent adult-use cannabis sales show there is — and will continue to be — strong support and demand from consumers,” said Toi Hutchinson, Governor Pritzker's top cannabis advisor, according to Marijuana Moment . On March 21, Governor J.B. Pritzker issued a stay-at-home order mandating that all non-essential businesses close in order to stop the spread of COVID-19 infections. The governor wisely...

Arizona Legal Marijuana Campaign Asks Supreme Court To Allow Electronic Signatures Amid Coronavirus
(Arizona, California, Cannabis, Education, Events, Idaho, Law, Legalization, Medical Marijuana, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, Oregon, Recreational, United States, Washington) Several campaigns to put initiatives on Arizona’s November ballot—including one to legalize marijuana—are asking the state Supreme Court to allow electronic signature gathering amid the coronavirus pandemic, which has made in-person ballot petitioning all but impossible. Smart and Safe Arizona, the group behind the cannabis measure, along with three other campaigns, filed a petition with the court on Thursday, requesting that it direct the secretary of state to let them digitally collect signatures. They stressed that the infrastructure already exists, as residents are able to use a system called E-Qual to sign ballot petitions for individual candidates running for office. While the marijuana campaign has already gathered more than 320,000 signatures , which is well over the required 237,645 signatures for statutory proposals, they have yet to be verified and activists would like to continue collection efforts to ensure that they qualify for the ballot. In the filing, the groups...

Cannabis Workers Claim Unsafe Conditions After Testing Positive for Coronavirus
(California, Cannabis, Law, Management, Massachusetts, Medical Marijuana, Nevada, Processing, Recreational, Regulations, Testing, United States, Dispensaries, Cultivation) The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission announced on Wednesday that it was investigating New England Treatment Access (NETA), one of the state’s largest pot companies, for allegedly placing its employees in an unsafe working environment amid the COVID-19 crisis. NETA confirmed that two of its employees tested positive for the coronavirus this week. One employee worked at the company’s Franklin cultivation and processing center. The other worked at NETA’s Northampton dispensary. A NETA spokesperson released a statement that said both employees self-identified their symptoms, contacted management as soon as they felt ill, got tested, then voluntarily self-quarantined, the Boston Globe reported. Additionally, the NETA spokesperson said that the company hired a third-party service to “deep clean” its dispensary and cultivation facility after learning about the employees’ positive coronavirus results. However, Barbara Carrapichano, a patient adviser at NETA’s Brookline dispensary,...

New York has recorded by far the highest numbers of positive tests and deaths in the country. But before the spread of coronavirus, New York was on track to legalize, and perhaps lead the entire northeast in a coordinated approach with neighboring states like Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Cuomo, who tried to legalize through the budget in 2019, too, said this January when he announced his legislative priorities during his budget address that he believes the budget process is “the opportunity, frankly, to make some tough decisions and work through tough issues that without the budget can often languish.” In the early months of 2020, a flurry of entities filed disclosures that indicated they were lobbying on cannabis issues. Some focused on lawmakers,...

U.S. Discovers Major Cross-Border Drug Smuggling Tunnel
(Arizona, California, Cannabis, Lighting, Mexico, United States, Soil, Security) By Elliot Spagat, Associated Press (AP) — A large haul of drugs, including opioids, methamphetamine and cocaine, being smuggled from Mexico to California was seized from a cross-border tunnel equipped with ventilation, lighting and an underground rail system, authorities said Tuesday. The tunnel connected warehouses in Tijuana and San Diego, extending about 2,000 feet (610 meters) with an average depth of 31 feet (9.5 meters) and width of 3 feet (0.9 meter), according to the San Diego Tunnel Task Force, an investigative team made up of several federal agencies. Investigators believe the tunnel existed for several months “due to the advanced construction observed in several portions.” Authorities seized more than two tons of a variety of drugs, a departure from earlier discoveries that consisted largely of marijuana. The discovery of the tunnel on March 19 netted about 1,300 pounds (590 kilograms) of cocaine, 86 pounds (39 kilograms) of methamphetamine, 17 pounds (7.7 kilograms) of...

Idaho Activists Suspend Campaign To Legalize Medical Marijuana Due To Coronavirus
(Arizona, California, Cannabis, Events, Idaho, Legalization, Medical Marijuana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, Oregon, Recreational, South Dakota, United States, Washington, THC) A campaign to put a medical marijuana initiative on Idaho’s November ballot announced on Thursday that it is suspending its signature collection efforts due to the coronavirus pandemic. It’s the latest in a series of drug policy reform campaign cancellations in recent weeks. Activists across the country have been left virtually helpless to qualify measures as governments continue to impose restrictions on public gatherings, encourage social distancing and issue shelter-in-place orders amid the COVID-19 outbreak. The Idaho Cannabis Coalition said that volunteers will no longer be conducting in-person signature gathering, and that will likely leave the campaign without enough signatures to make the ballot. They had to collect 55,057 by May 1 to qualify. Additionally, the state requires that initiatives receive signatures from six percent of registered voters from a majority of legislative districts. What that means is “the odds are against Idahoans being able to vote on medical...

2 Marijuana Stocks To Watch: Is Investing Long Term The Best Option?
(California, Canada, Cannabis, Cresco Labs, CRLBF, Grower, Growers, Investing, Investments, Investors, OGRMF, OrganiGram Inc, Stocks, United States, Dispensaries, Cultivation) The short term in the cannabis industry is arguably a very difficult time frame for investors. In the past three weeks, we have seen prices shoot down by more than 40% for some of the largest marijuana stocks in the industry. This, however, should not dissuade investors as it appears to be the short term result of the coronavirus. Cops Are Still Busting Weed Grows in the Middle of the Coronavirus Pandemic
(California, Cannabis, Extraction, Law, Oklahoma, Products, United States, Soil) Photo via Across the globe, police forces are adjusting to law and order under a viral pandemic. Court rooms are closed, judges and lawyers are largely holed up at home, and for police in large cities, beat cops have prioritized enforcing quarantine orders over petty crime stops. But when it comes to black market marijuana enforcement, tearing pot plants out of soil is apparently more important than protecting officers and suspects from spreading COVID-19. According to KFOR News , police in Harrah, Oklahoma raided a home grow site, confiscated 2,600 cannabis plants, and arrested at least two suspects in what cops are describing as a $1.3 million weed bust. In addition to the “multiple arrests” made at the grow site, local cops said that they are still pursuing additional suspects. Initial news reports made no mention of the ongoing global pandemic or dire conditions in the country’s crowded jails . Similarly, California cops have executed their own share of black market cannabis raids...

We’ll continue to update as regulators announce new policies. So far, during the COVID-19 pandemic, cannabis sales are through the roof as consumers stock up in anticipation of supply chain disruption. But, despite this upswing, cannabis companies are bracing for impact. As Cannabis Wire reported this week, a dilemma has hit the nascent industry: to close or not to close? Already, Canopy Growth chose to close nearly two dozen shops in Canada, and we’re tracking how other companies are reacting. But what happens in the case of forced closures? Cannabis regulators will have to weigh tough decisions in the coming days as businesses, from gyms to bowling alleys to bars, are asked to close as part of broader efforts to contain the spread of the virus. (While Canadian consumers can legally order cannabis online, should closures occur, changes are taking place north of the border. On...

Adult-Use Cannabis Sales Are Slumping as the Reality of Lockdown Hits
(California, Cannabis, Colorado, Marketing, Recreational, United States, Washington, Recreational Cannabis, Cultivation) Legal marijuana sales broke records two weeks ago, just as the US began to see its first confirmed coronavirus cases. However, recreational cannabis sales figures have started falling in California, Washington State, and Colorado, the nation’s three largest legal weed markets. According to data from the weed analytics firm Headset, Colorado saw the largest sales slump over the weekend (from March 27-29), down 47 percent compared to the same weekend in 2019, MJBizDaily reported. “The entire tourism industry shut down” in lieu of lockdowns to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, said Lisa Gee, the marketing director at the Colorado cannabis chain Lightshade. “The ski areas officially closed three weeks ago. This would have been spring break, so you’re removing an entire sector.” Annually, Colorado’s tourism industry generates over $20 billion in sales and draws nearly 90 million tourists from around the country and the world. In an Instagram Stories session, the congresswoman took questions from followers, including one person who posed the question: “Do you think dispensaries should be considered essential businesses?” “I’d say that if your state is deeming liquor stores to be an essential business, it doesn’t seem consistent as to why a liquor store would be essential but a dispensary wouldn’t,” Ocasio-Cortez replied. “You’ve got to make a decision one way or another.” This has been an area of particular focus for the cannabis industry and advocates, who have pushed for continued access to marijuana products amid this pandemic, albeit with certain social distancing safety protocols in place. Most legal states, including California and Colorado have...

Captor Capital Implements Adjustments in Response to Coronavirus
(Acquisition, Advertising, California, Cannabis, Cleaning, Events, Financing, Investing, Investment, Law, Marketing, Michigan, Products, Recreational, Regulations, United States, Dispensaries, Extracts) Captor Capital Corp. (CSE: CPTR ; FRANKFURT:NMV; STUTTGART:NMVA; OTC:CPTRF), (“Captor” or the “Company”) has in recent weeks made several adjustments to its retail model, chiefly an increased focus on delivery service and online orders, and its business strategy, in response to the coronavirus outbreak that has shut down the majority of businesses in California. These adjustments follow the successful lobbying of local government by a cannabis industry group in Santa Cruz County led by Oliver Summers, head of Captor Capital’s CHAI retail operations in Santa Cruz and Monterey County. “We were extremely happy the government recognized the importance of keeping cannabis businesses open during these trying times and after a long period of negotiations on this issue we have been able to focus on the needs of our valued customers,” said Mr. Summers. “CHAI Cannabis is doing everything we can to keep them safe, including increased cleaning and disinfecting, a curbside pick-up option, and of...

BFD Alert: Coronavirus Cannabis Scams and Pitfalls
(California, Cannabis, Cannabis and Hemp, CBD, CF, Compliance, Development, Financing, Food, Hemp, Investing, Investment, Investors, Law, Loans, Massachusetts, Medical Marijuana, Production, Products, Regulations, Science, United States, Dispensaries, Funding, Security) The rapid and devastating proliferation of COVID-19 has affected businesses worldwide, and cannabis is no exception. Here in California (and in other states), the state announced that medical cannabis dispensaries are essential and may remain open as part of the state’s Stay-At-Home order. The medical cannabis businesses that supply those dispensaries are also essential under that order. In addition, certain cities in California (like Los Angeles and San Francisco) have their own shelter-in-place or stay-at-home orders that also identify medical cannabis businesses and the businesses that supply them as essential. Unless a city or a county says otherwise, the state’s Stay-At-Home order protects the operation of medical cannabis businesses throughout the state. With medical cannabis businesses allowed to stay open and operational across the country during COVID-19, sales of medical cannabis to consumers has been on a tear. While increased medical cannabis sales and production is a...

For Platinum’s George Sadler, Cannabis Businesses Carry Great Responsibility as Essential Businesses During COVID-19 Crisis
(Banking, Batteries, California, Cannabis, China, Cleaning, Edibles, Manufacturing, Michigan, Oklahoma, Packaging, Products, United States, Dispensaries, Cultivation) After being deemed essential businesses in many states, cannabis companies have been busier than ever amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and product manufacturers like Platinum are no exception.Co-founder George Sadler says it’s business as usual for the California-based company, which produces vapes and edibles for sale in California, Michigan and Oklahoma. In early March, Platinum foresaw potential supply shortages for its vape cartridge hardware and batteries, which are produced in China. The company secured a large volume of these items from a United States-based supplier to avoid interruptions in the supply chain, which has proven to be a large advantage, Sadler tells Cannabis Business Times.“That was probably the most critical point for us, was the fact that we got into that early enough and were able to do that,” he says. “Other than that, our packaging is made right here in the U.S., [so] we don’t have the issue with that. As far as product goes, there aren’t any change because in the...

What Is the Whizzinator and Can It Actually Beat Drug Tests?
(California, Cannabis, Clothing, Drug Tests, Law, Marketing, Synthetic, Tennessee, United States) As a cannabis smoker with a job or pending legal situation that subjects you to random drug screenings, urine tests can be a serious drag. The steep repercussions that can follow a failed urinalysis drug screening can be monumental and cause serious disruptions in one's life. Nobody should lose their job or go to jail just for enjoying some herb — but here we are. To avoid this injustice without giving up their weed , many people over the years have attempted to come up with clever ways to fool drug screens. One method relies on substituting a “clean” (or even synthetic) urine sample for an actual one. But this option can have some logistical issues, particularly if you’re forced to provide the sample while you’re being observed. Enter the Whizzinator. The Whizzinator Touch! in "White," image via WTF Is the Whizzinator? Simply put, the Whizzinator is a fake penis made from a rubbery plastic that comes with an attached reservoir for holding a clean or synthetic urine sample. Both the...

Tupac Detective Calls for Arrest of "Self-Confessed" Murder Accomplice Keffe D
(California, Law, New Jersey, United States) In 1996, legendary rapper Tupac Shakur was murdered in Las Vegas during a drive-by shooting. And now, one of the cops originally assigned to investigate both Tupac and the Notorious BIG’s deaths is demanding the immediate arrest of a gang leader who claims to have been an accomplice in Tupac’s murder. Last week, former LAPD officer Greg Kading said during an interview with The Sun that Las Vegas police should arrest Duane “Keefe D” Davis (sometimes spelled "Keffe D") for his alleged participation in Tupac’s death. "He has confessed publicly multiple times about his role in the murder of Tupac,” Kading said . “And I cannot think of any case in American crime history where a confessing murderer is allowed to continue and go speak blatantly about his involvement in a crime. It is unprecedented.” In recent years, Keffe D has, in fact, claimed in books and documentaries that he was partially responsible for Tupac’s death. Officer Kading also possesses LAPD archived audio recordings of his...

Marijuana Legalization ‘Not Likely’ In New York Budget, Governor Says On Eve Of Deadline
(Arizona, California, Cannabis, Connecticut, Events, Legalization, Medical Marijuana, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Regulations, United States, Washington) Marijuana legalization is “not likely” to be included in the final budget in New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) said on Tuesday, explaining that the issue proved too complicated as the state grapples with the coronavirus. Another sign that the policy change isn’t happening as Cuomo and advocates had planned comes from a pair of newly revised budget bills that exclude the proposal, making it all but certain that legalization won’t make the final cut. “Too much, too little time,” the governor said of the proposal during a press conference. Watch Cuomo’s cannabis comments in the video below: Later in the day, Cuomo expanded on why legal cannabis likely would be left out of the budget in a radio interview. “We’re not going to get there. I don’t believe we get there because in truth that is something that had to be talked through and worked through, and the legislature wasn’t here. I was doing this COVID virus,” he told WAMC’s Alan Chartock. “That requires time to do it right.” “That is not a...

Cannabis Advocates Push for Emergency Weed Delivery Rules Amid COVID-19 Crisis
(California, Cannabis, Colorado, Illinois, Law, Medical Marijuana, Mountain High Acquisitions Corp., Nevada, Products, Regulations, United States, Dispensaries) All non-essential businesses are closed in dozens of US states to slow the spread of COVID-19. But, most adult-use regions have recognized cannabis retailers as essential services . Showing up in person at a legal weed shop increases the risk that an infected customer might spread the virus to store employees or other shoppers, however. In Nevada, state regulators decided to nip this issue in the bud by mandating all legal weed stores operate on a delivery-only basis. Because home delivery was already legal in the state, most dispensaries were already prepared to make the switch from storefront sales to delivery trucks. In order to help companies transition, the state issued a temporary remote inspection policy allowing them to approve 300 new weed delivery vehicles within a week. Local weed businesses are now seeing a massive spike in demand, as the quarantine left many residents unemployed and stuck at home. "We’ve seen a huge influx in new users, they’re curious,” said Jamal...

Psychedelics Activists In DC Have New Plan to Collect Signatures During Pandemic
(California, Cannabis, Oregon, United States, Washington, Washington DC) This Monday, Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser issued a quarantine order requiring all non-essential workers to remain at home in order to slow the spread of COVID-19 infections. But as necessary as these measures are, they could derail a serious effort to bring natural psychedelics reform to the nation's capital. Earlier this year, Decriminalize Nature DC began circulating a petition to place a psychedelics reform initiative on this year's general election ballot. If passed, the measure would require city police to regard the possession and use of plant-based entheogens like psilocybin mushrooms, ayahuasca, or peyote as their lowest enforcement priority. Denver , Oakland , and Santa Cruz all recently passed similar measures, and activists in hundreds of other US cities are also fighting for local psychedelics reform initiatives. Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic has forced Decriminalize Nature DC to suspend its efforts at signature collection . Activists asked DC officials to...

Cannabis Delivery Proves Essential During COVID-19 Quarantine
(Alcohol, California, Cannabis, Development, Exploring, Legalization, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Recreational, United States, Licensee, Security) There are so many disturbing and upsetting developments that have occurred over the last month concerning the global pandemic, Coronavirus, that it is hard to count. But one specific development has been pretty interesting in regard to cannabis legalization. State after sate has determined cannabis to be an “essential” part of life. This is quite the validation the industry has been seeking since prohibition. And with this “essential” new status has come a surge in sales across the board as users stock pile the items they feel they need the most to get through these trying times. Although sales are surging for the industry overall, one group of license holders have become more essential than others: delivery services. Considering the nature of a viral pandemic and the need to stay as far away from other human beings as possible, it makes sense that having your groceries, alcohol, toilet paper and weed delivered would feel the safest. States like Louisiana, Pennsylvania and NJ, among...

COVID-19’s Spread Highlights Need for More Stringent Microbial Cannabis Testing
(California, Cannabis, Compliance, Facilities, Growing, Hemp, Medical Marijuana, Ohio, Products, Quality Control, Regulations, Testing, United States, Dispensaries) As cannabis sales soar and a growing number of states declare dispensaries essential amid a growing pandemic, consumers are increasingly turning to medical marijuana and hemp for their health benefits. But in some states, those products may not be as beneficial as they seem.At a time when public health is in the limelight, the team at North Coast Testing Laboratory LLC, based in Streetsboro, Ohio, is advocating for more stringent microbial testing requirements from states to prevent people from getting sick from harmful yeast and mold on marijuana products.North Coast Testing became one of the first medical marijuana testing facilities approved in the state in 2018, and it has also received ISO 17025 accreditation. The lab conducts cannabis microbial contamination tests for yeast and mold levels using two different methods—but the one method mandated in Ohio, as well as in most states around the country, they argue, is inferior. And in the face of a growing public health crisis, both...

Coronavirus Upends Marijuana, Psychedelics And Drug Reform Ballot Measures
(California, Cannabis, Growing, Legalization, Missouri, Oregon, United States) Marijuana and drug policy reform advocates came into 2020 believing it would be a big—and perhaps unprecedented—year for legalization and decriminalization measures on state ballots . From California to Missouri to Oregon, they had high hopes for placing far-reaching initiatives before voters in November. But many of those efforts have been severely impeded by the coronavirus pandemic, which has made mass signature gathering to qualify ballot measures all but impossible as public health and government officials have urged social distancing measures. Here’s a look at the growing list of ballot initiatives on cannabis and broader drug reforms that have been effectively halted by the COVID-19 outbreak. The History of Vaping: From Clouds of Inspiration to How We Get High Today
(California, Cannabis, Egypt, Germany, Growing, Hemp, Hookah, India, Lighting, Massachusetts, Oils, Products, Smokeless, Texas, Tobacco, United States, Vaporizers, Vaporizers, THC, Patents) With thick, fragrant wafts of vaporized flowers and oils cascading around us, it’s easy to forget that less than a decade ago, vaping wasn’t a thing. It existed, of course, but it wasn’t popular. In fact, it wasn’t a trend until semi-recently. Setting fire to flowers and inhaling the smoke was always the standard for getting stoned. The vape boom rocked the past decade, however, ultimately changing the way people smoke. For the first time ever, California sold more cannabis concentrates in the form of THC oil found in vape pens than traditional flower, according to Penthouse Magazine . Vape cartridges are, thus, the fastest growing product in the legal weed landscape. In recent years, nicotine-vaping products have also tapped into the zeitgeist. Since 2018, they racked up $5.5 billion in sales, causing controversy by allegedly having great appeal to underage customers. In 2019, a sudden eruption of lung illnesses and even some deaths reportedly linked to vaping ignited a “panic” and...
