We’ll continue to update as regulators announce new policies. So far, during the COVID-19 pandemic, cannabis sales are through the roof as consumers stock up in anticipation of supply chain disruption. But, despite this upswing, cannabis companies are bracing for impact. As Cannabis Wire reported this week, a dilemma has hit the nascent industry: to close or not to close? Already, Canopy Growth chose to close nearly two dozen shops in Canada, and we’re tracking how other companies are reacting. But what happens in the case of forced closures? Cannabis regulators will have to weigh tough decisions in the coming days as businesses, from gyms to bowling alleys to bars, are asked to close as part of broader efforts to contain the spread of the virus. (While Canadian consumers can legally order cannabis online, should closures occur, changes are taking place north of the border. On...

The 2018 Farm Bill gives the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulatory authority over hemp cultivation at the federal level. In turn, states have the option to maintain primary regulatory authority over the crop cultivated within their borders by submitting a plan to the USDA. This federal and state interplay has resulted in many legislative and regulatory changes at the state level. Indeed, most states have introduced (and adopted) bills that would authorize the commercial production of hemp within their borders. A smaller but growing number of states also regulate the sale of products derived from hemp. In light of these legislative changes, we are presenting a 50-state series analyzing how each jurisdiction treats hemp-...

Cannabis Entrepreneurs Flock to the Bible Belt for Lower Costs
(Arizona, Arkansas, California, Cannabis, Colorado, Law, Legalization, Louisiana, Medical Marijuana, Oklahoma, Oregon, Recreational, Regulations, United States, Lights, Dispensaries, Cultivation) By Sean Murphy, Associated Press (AP) — From their keen taste for sun-ripened pot to their first meeting at a pro-marijuana rally in college in the 1990s, everything about Chip and Jessica Baker fits the stereotype of cannabis country in Northern California, where they lived for 20 years and started their pot business in rugged Humboldt County when it was the thriving epicenter of marijuana cultivation. But the couple bid goodbye to the weed-friendly West and moved somewhere that might seem like the last place they would end up — Oklahoma. They’re part of a green rush into the Bible Belt that no one anticipated when Oklahoma voters approved medical marijuana less than two years ago. Since then, a combination of factors — including a remarkably open-ended law and a red state’s aversion to government regulation — have created such ideal conditions for the cannabis industry that entrepreneurs are pouring in from states where legal weed has been established for years. Though 11 states...

Mississippi Medical Marijuana Measure At Risk After House Approves Alternate Ballot Question
(Arkansas, Cannabis, Consulting, Legalization, Medical Marijuana, Mississippi, Products, United States, Cultivation) A ballot initiative to legalize medical marijuana in Mississippi suffered a blow on Tuesday after the House passed a resolution to include an alternative measure on the November ballot that could result in a less robust program for patients who need cannabis. Reform advocates grew concerned after lawmakers introduced a series of alternative resolutions in recent weeks. If more than one legalization measure appears on the ballot, there’s also a significant risk that the vote will be split and none will be approved. More than 200,000 signatures were collected to put Initiative 65 before voters . The alternative is regarded as more restrictive and prone to legislative interpretation , and advocates suspect the primary reason for its introduction was to kill the original, more far-reaching initiative by confusing voters. The House approved the alternate version it in a 72-49 vote. It now heads to the Senate, where it’s also expected to advance. Medical Marijuana 2020. According to...

Want to Start a Weed Biz Without the High Cost of Entry? Move to the Bible Belt
(Alcohol, Arkansas, California, Cannabis, Education, Growing, Law, Legalization, Louisiana, Maine, Medical Marijuana, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Regulations, United States, Dispensaries) If you were making a list of the most weed-friendly parts of the US, the Bible Belt would probably not be at the top. But, more and more cannabis entrepreneurs are thinking about relocating to Oklahoma, where low licensing costs and relaxed regulations have allowed local medical marijuana markets to thrive. Unlike some adult-use states — like Maine , which is still struggling to open legal weed shops four years after legalization — Oklahoma's medical cannabis industry is on the fast track to success. Oklahoma voters legalized the country's most progressive medical marijuana law in 2018 , allowing any doctor to recommend medical cannabis to treat literally any condition. State officials attempted to impose serious restrictions on this program, but eventually backed down and respected voters' wishes. Last fall, the Sooner State already accepted over 210,000 registered medical cannabis patients, and six percent of the state's 4 million residents now have medical marijuana cards. In the...

Hemp CBD Across State Lines: Pennsylvania
(Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Cannabis, CBD, Colorado, Connecticut, Cosmetics, Delaware, Florida, Foods, Georgia, Growing, Hawaii, Hemp, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Law, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mexico, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Production, Products, United States, Industrial Hemp, Cultivation) The Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 ( 2018 Farm Bill ) legalized hemp by removing the crop and its derivatives from the definition of marijuana under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) and by providing a detailed framework for the cultivation of hemp.

The Lord Will Provide: Pot entrepreneurs flocking to the Bible Belt for low taxes
(Arkansas, California, Cannabis, Colorado, Grower, Growers, Hawaii, Law, Legalization, Louisiana, Medical Marijuana, Oklahoma, Oregon, Recreational, Regulations, United States, Lights, Dispensaries, Cultivation) ABC News (USA) reports OKLAHOMA CITY — From their keen taste for sun-ripened pot to their first meeting at a pro-marijuana rally in college in the 1990s, everything about Chip and Jessica Baker fits the stereotype of cannabis country in Northern California, where they lived for 20 years. Jessica, with wavy hair that falls halfway down her back, is a practicing herbalist, acupuncturist and aromatherapist who teaches classes on the health benefits of cannabis. Scruffy-bearded Chip wears a jacket with a prominent “grower” patch and hosts a marijuana podcast called “The Real Dirt.” They started their pot business in rugged Humboldt County when it was the thriving epicenter of marijuana cultivation. But the couple bid goodbye to the weed-friendly West and moved somewhere that might seem like the last place they would end up — Oklahoma. They’re part of a green rush into the Bible Belt that no one anticipated when Oklahoma voters approved medical marijuana less than two years ago. Since then...
