NIDA Releases Request for Information on THC Dosing Standards
(Cannabis, Products, Research, THC) The National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) has released a request for information, inviting comments from “the scientific community and other interested parties,” to help establish a standard dose for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive constituent in cannabis, to improve cannabis research, according to a report from Cannabis News Wire.In the notice published March 23, NIDA acknowledges the complexity of the plant and how effects vary between individuals, methods of consumption and phytochemical ratios, but emphasizes the critical necessity of establishing and implementing a “standard unit dose” for “rigorous cannabis research.” The notice cites published commentary by NIDA director Dr. Nora Valkow on the subject:“These complexities hardly negate the value of having a standardized measure of THC, irrespective of product type. In fact, having and using such a standard is a prerequisite for comparing the effects of various cannabis products on THC bioavailability,...

Fly High in the World’s First Hemp Airplane
(Alcohol, Cannabis, Hemp, Hemp, Inc., New York, Organic, Production, Research, United States, THC, Cultivation) The sky is the limit for the benefits of the hemp plant. The hemp airplane might be poised to change a problematic industry. While it’s a necessity for much of the population and the integrity of global economies, the aviation industry is one of the biggest polluters out there. Even as aircraft become more fuel-efficient, the demand continues to outstrip the benefits. According to a report from the International Council on Clean Transportation (2018), the demand for air travel is increasing 1.5 times faster than U.N. estimates. In an industry that’s responsible for 2.4 percent of the world’s emissions, this growth is a significant contributor to climate change. But, as big a polluter as air travel may be, it isn’t going anywhere. These alarming stats merely push many entrepreneurially-minded individuals to look for ever-more efficient alternatives in how the aviation industry moves forward. For one Canadian based company, the next evolution in aviation is the hemp airplane. Taking...

Learn To Marijuana Like a Pro While You’re on Virus Lockdown
(Beverage, Cannabis, Education, Grower, Growing, Science, THC Farmaceuticals, Inc, THC, Cultivation) If you are reading this, chances are you are hunkered down somewhere, like the rest of America, just wondering when or if civil society will rise above this gnarly virus and get back to normal. But after taking in just 30 seconds of the daily press conferences held by the White House, it is plain to see there isn’t much hope that day is coming anytime soon. Although President Donald Trump claims there isn’t a need for a national lockdown, and he’s even mentioned that he might let the country ditch all of this social distancing stuff to keep economies from tanking, many states have still instituted “stay at home” orders to keep the population at home. It means that millions of people, just like you, are hanging around the house, bored out of their skulls. At first, it was sort of like an extended vacation, but now that you’ve cleaned all of your bongs, built a couple of new ones, and possibly even engineered a new cannabis strain called “Corona-B-Gone,” there isn’t much else to do...

90% of Medical Marijuana Is Too Strong for Chronic Pain Patients, Study Says
(Cannabis, Food, Legalization, Medical Marijuana, Oils, Products, Recreational, Regulations, Research, United States, Websites, THC) Researchers at the Wake Forest School of Medicine published a new study late last week about a pain medication that could be too strong for most patients. But instead of Oxycontin, fentanyl, or dozens of other opioids, the study’s authors claimed that medical cannabis was simply too powerful to properly treat pain. According to concurrent reports from Scitechdaily and New Atlas , the study, titled “Mapping cannabis potency in medical and recreational programs in the United States,” was published late last week in the journal PLOS ONE. By analyzing product potency listings from 8,505 batches of flower on 653 legal cannabis dispensary websites across the US, Dr. Alfonso Edgar Romero-Sandoval and his co-authors found statistical evidence for what cannabis aficionados have known for years: Pot is getting more potent. The researchers discovered that most cannabis flower sold in legal pot shops — both medical and adult-use — contained more than 10 percent THC, with a significant number of...

Can Cannabinoids Treat COVID-19 Symptoms? Canadian Scientists Want to Find Out
(Canada, Cannabis, CBD, Edibles, Medical Marijuana, Science, Topicals, THC) As the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread around the world, scientists and researchers are scrambling for answers about what type of drug regimens could help slow or stop the illness. But while some government leaders have already been cavalier about announcing potential treatments , at least one Canadian doctor wants to run clinical trials on cannabinoids to find out if the cannabis compounds can help COVID-19 patients reduce inflammation and boost their immune systems. “What we know from medical cannabis over the course of the literature and the experience we’ve had in Canada over the years is that there are known anti-inflammatory properties that cannabinoids have — cannabinoids being the active ingredients that come from the cannabis plant,” Dr. Mohan Cooray, president and CEO of the physician-led online medical cannabis retailer Cannalogue told The Toronto Sun . “On top of that, we know from a medical standpoint that these active ingredients have immunomodulatory properties...

Florida: Cannabis Companies Spent Big to Lobby in 2019. What About 2020?
(Acreage Holdings, ACRGF, Cannabis, CGC, Florida, Green Thumb, Growing, GTBIF, Hemp, HRVSF, Law, Medical Marijuana, Products, Regulations, Research, Seed to Sale, TCNNF, United States, Vertical Integration, Vertical Integration, Vertically Integrated, THC, Dispensaries) Cannabis businesses, which have increasingly turned to Florida’s rapidly growing market, spent $3.7 million on lobbying in the state in 2019—more than double the year before—according to a Cannabis Wire analysis. What does that portend for an uncertain 2020? What all this 2019 lobbying cash was aimed at is not entirely clear. But it came as state lawmakers, regulators, and the courts weighed issues that could profoundly impact the fledgling industry. These include a legislative cap on the amount of THC in cannabis products, a new law allowing medical patients to smoke cannabis flower, and big industry-shaping court cases challenging everything from the number of cannabis companies licensed in the state to Florida’s medical cannabis law itself. The lobbying increase also signals that the Sunshine State has been viewed as a land of opportunity for cannabis companies, especially big ones. “The Florida market looks ripe for opportunity,” said Andrew Livingston, director of economics and...

Moreover, quality remains the top criterion in selecting a cannabis product for purchase. How are companies setting the standards for quality and how are we researching consumers to understand their experiences with cannabis products accurately and ethically? This post explores the manufacturing and research standards to consider when conducting research studies with cannabis. Product Quality in Manufacturing At an HIV Community Cannabis Education event held in Toronto, a cannabis company proudly declared their company had not had a single product recall to date. Product recall happens when a product is defective, damaged or does not meet the customer’s expectations causing the product to be called off the shelf. This “zero recall” standard, the team said, was attributed to the fact that their cannabis product standards...

(California, Cannabis, CBD, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Medical Marijuana, Mexico, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Products, Recreational, Research, Rhode Island, United States, Vermont, Washington, Websites, THC, Dispensaries, Pharmaceuticals) The European Pharmaceutical review reports….According to new research, more than 90 percent of the legal marijuana products offered in medical dispensaries in the US are much stronger than what clinical studies have shown doctors recommend for chronic pain relief. “We know that high-potency products should not have a place in the medical realm because of the high risk of developing cannabis-use disorders, which are related to exposure to high tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content products,” said the study’s lead author, Dr Alfonso Edgar Romero-Sandoval, associate professor of anaesthesiology at Wake Forest School of Medicine, part of Wake Forest Baptist Health, US. “Several earlier studies showed that levels of up to 5 percent THC – the main psychoactive compound in marijuana that provides pain relief as well as intoxication – were sufficient to reduce chronic pain with minimal side effects.” The goal of this study was to evaluate the advertised THC and cannabidiol (CBD) content of legal...

The 2018 Farm Bill gives the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulatory authority over hemp cultivation at the federal level. In turn, states have the option to maintain primary regulatory authority over the crop cultivated within their borders by submitting a plan to the USDA. This federal and state interplay has resulted in many legislative and regulatory changes at the state level. Indeed, most states have introduced (and adopted) bills that would authorize the commercial production of hemp within their borders. A smaller but growing number of states also regulate the sale of products derived from hemp. In light of these legislative changes, we are presenting a 50-state series analyzing how each jurisdiction treats hemp-...

Hemp CBD Across Europe: Spain
(Cannabis, CBD, Cosmetics, Facilities, Food, Foods, Hemp, Law, Legalization, Marketing, Pet Foods, Production, Products, Regulations, Research, Spain, Strains, United States, Industrial Hemp, THC, Extracts) The enactment of the 2018 Farm Bill and the legalization of hemp and hemp derivatives, including cannabidiol (“CBD”), has led to a massive CBD craze in the United States. The highly coveted cannabinoid is infused with everything: bath bombs, dog treats and even workout clothes (yes, workout clothes!). According to a recent study by Cowen , the sales of these products are expected to reach $16 billion by 2025. Thanks to globalization, this sudden boom is not contained within the U.S. borders. Europe has also experienced a huge uptick in the sales of these products, which are expected to reach nearly $1.7 billion by 2023. In light of this global expansion and the desire of many of our clients to export their hemp and hemp-derived CBD (“Hemp CBD”) products to Europe, we are presenting a mini-series that briefly analyzes how certain European countries treat hemp and the sale and marketing of hemp-derived CBD. (Beverage, Cannabis, CBD, Drinks, Edibles, Exploring, Food, Foods, Growing, Hemp, Legalization, Medical Marijuana, Medical Marijuana Inc, MJNA, Packaging, Products, Recreational, Research, United States, THC, Dispensaries) Marijuana edibles are cannabis-infused food products that offer delayed, yet extended effects. Offering a tasty alternative to smoking or vaporizing cannabis, marijuana edibles are food and beverage products that have been infused with cannabis. Consumers who enjoy marijuana edibles typically prefer the extended and more intense effects that they offer compared to other types of marijuana products. Many different types of marijuana edibles are available to purchase in legal marijuana states throughout the United States, where more than half of the states have legalized recreational or medical marijuana . It’s also common now for cannabis connoisseurs to make their own marijuana-infused cuisine at home. While marijuana edibles are popular among regular, long-term marijuana users, they’re also a favored choice among beginners who are being introduced to cannabis for the very first time and are looking for an easy way to take their marijuana. (Biodiesel, Cannabis, CBD, Clothing, Events, Growers, Hemp, Hemp, Inc., Legalization, Loans, Manufacturing, Medical Marijuana, OTC:HEMP, Pennsylvania, Products, Testing, United States, Virginia, THC, Dispensaries, Cultivation) The federal Small Business Administration (SBA) is celebrating the potential of hemp and is urging federal regulators to address concerns from farmers before rules for the crop are finalized. At the same time, however, it is maintaining that it cannot service marijuana businesses due to ongoing federal prohibition. In a blog post published on Tuesday, SBA’s Office of Advocacy described the wide range of uses for hemp, including rope and CBD oil, and detailed the crop’s evolution from a federally controlled substance to an agricultural commodity that was legalized through the 2018 Farm Bill. “From rope to clothing, biodiesel to hempcrete, plant-based ingestible protein to CBD balm, the uses of hemp are far-reaching.” The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) now has jurisdiction over the plant, and it released an interim final rule last year outlining guidelines for a domestic hemp program . In the time since the crop’s legalization, SBA says it has “embarked on an ambitious and...

Is Pharmaceutical CBD More Effective Than Herb?
(Cannabis, CBD, Growers, GW Pharmaceuticals plc, Legalization, Research, Science, Self-Contained Growing Systems, United States, Washington, Washington DC, THC, Extracts, Pharmaceuticals, Cultivation) Many studies point to the unwanted side effects of pharmaceutical CBD but this one says it’s more effective. CBD offers much medicinal promise, be it pharmaceutical or artisanal. Free of dangerous side effects, its potent anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, and anxiolytic abilities make it the subject of much scientific inquiry. Further, financial experts expect the cannabis market to reach over seventy billion dollars by 2027. With so much money at stake, it’s little surprise that several competing industries are attempting to benefit from future projections. Big Pharma, who opt for isolated and refined extracts from the plant, are currently jostling for market position with growers and small producers who believe in the more holistic artisanal forms of cannabis. The Efficacy of Pharmaceutical CBD Approved by the FDA in 2018, Epidiolex is the first pharmaceutical CBD solution to receive approval. CBD still remains a schedule 1 substance in the U.S., but that only applies to those...

Could COVID-19 Crisis Interrupt Canada’s CBD Supply?
(Canada, Cannabis, CBD, Growing, THC) CANNABIS CULTURE - With the use of CBD oil growing for a wide variety of conditions, many are wondering if they’ll be able to continue getting their product throughout the coronavirus pandemic. This could set back the Canadian cannabis market which just recently began to overcome already existing shortages. Unfortunately, these shortages seem to still remain a problem, with most producers focusing on high-THC flowers and oil. So, with the coronavirus continuing to spread, should…

Is That A Marijuana Vape Pen In This North Carolina Mayor’s Take-Out Dinner Pic?
(Cannabis, CBD, Food, Law, Legalization, North Carolina, Packaging, United States, THC) A North Carolina mayor was probably only trying to highlight best social distancing practices and support for local businesses when she posted photos of her takeout dinner on Twitter. But by failing to crop out what appears to be a marijuana vape pen, she sparked a different conversation entirely. “Here is what we did tonight to support our local restaurants,” Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin (D) wrote earlier this month. “Take out from Garland. And we left a 35 percent tip. Please do the same.” As residents in more jurisdictions around the country have been encouraged to stay at home amid the spread of the coronavirus, delivery and takeout food orders have become popular ways of supporting small businesses. Baldwin’s tweet included two photos of her group’s Indian dinner spread, still in its to-go packaging. In one photo, just north of the tandoori poussin, is what appears to be a cannabis vape pen. Here is what we did tonight to support our local restaurants. Take out from Garland...

To the untrained eye, there may not appear to be any difference between CBD from marijuana vs CBD oil from hemp, but there are actually quite a few notable distinctions between the two. At Medical Marijuana, Inc., our CBD products are derived from hemp, giving users a legal, safe and high-quality way to experience the benefits of CBD products. Cannabis Businesses Are Ineligible for Federal Coronavirus Relief
(Cannabis, Distribution, Growers, Hemp, Law, Loans, Products, United States, Washington, THC, Cultivation) The US Senate has just agreed on a 2 trillion dollar stimulus package to help boost the economy during the coronavirus quarantine, but as usual, state-legal cannabis businesses are being left out of the picture . On Monday, Greg Hubly, the owner of a small weed business in Washington State, asked the Small Business Association (SBA) whether cannabis companies would be eligible for federal relief packages. The Pacific NW chapter of the SBA responded that “with the exception of businesses that produce or sell hemp and hemp-derived products... marijuana-related businesses are not eligible for SBA-funded services.” Hubly was not surprised by the agency's response. Cannabis plants containing more than 0.3 percent THC are still classified as marijuana, a Schedule I drug , and federal law prohibits any business that handles a controlled substance from receiving any sort of federal aid. Hemp, on the other hand, was made federally legal by the 2018 Farm Bill , and hemp businesses are therefore...

A Do’s and Don’ts Guide for Preventing Bud Buzzkills in the Bedroom
(Cannabis, CBD, Medical Marijuana, Oils, Production, Products, THC, Security) It’s no secret that sex and cannabis make a mighty match. The plant can increase your body’s sensitivity, and many users report feeling hornier and less inhibited after getting high. Those with trauma histories and sexual dysfunction often turn to cannabis, which can calm the nerves, help people connect with their bodies, and even aid with painful sex . While the benefits of stoned sex are plentiful, there are unfortunately some downsides that can arise. From dry mouth and “cottonpussy,” to miscommunication issues and dizziness, the complications of adding bud to the bedroom are myriad — though they can be prevented and alleviated if you know your stuff. So, here are some do’s and don’ts to consider before you dive into your next 420-filled fuckfest. DO: Stay Hydrated (with more than just water!) One of the most common side effects of cannabis consumption, particularly with smoking or vaping, is xerostomia , more commonly referred to as dry mouth. “When THC binds to the submandibular...

Have You Tried a THC Salve for Your Itchy Skin?
(Cannabis, CBD, Cosmetics, Production, Research, Science, Topicals, THC) Cannabinoids can potentially help skin disorders. But can a THC salve help reduce itchiness? And, which cannabinoid works best for pruritus? The research is still early, but scientific studies are showing us that cannabis can potentially help alleviate hard-to-treat skin disorders, like psoriasis, acne and eczema. These disorders are inflammatory in nature, which is one of the ways cannabinoids are able to help, particularly CBD . But could cannabis — specifically a THC salve — also help with pruritus or itchiness? While there hasn’t been much research into this topic, there are a few things we do know about cannabis treatment and itch relief. And, coupled with scientific knowledge about the endocannabinoid system itself, we can glean a few ideas on how cannabis could help. Topical Cannabis Reduces Dryness and Redness Research has shown that cannabis creams can interact with endocannabinoid receptors in the skin, and that they could also potentially help with acne and redness. THC...

What Are the Most Colorful Weed Strains and How Do They Get Their Hues?
(California, Canada, Cannabis, Genetics, Growers, Growing, Production, Research, Science, Strains, United States, THC, Cultivation) For cannabis connoisseurs, the intoxicating effects of THC are only one aspect of the overall marijuana experience. Past the high, there’s the scent, the taste, the bud structure, and of course, the colors. From vibrant green buds and strains that are undeniably “purp,” to flower varietals with bright red and orange hairs, cannabis cultivars can embody a whole medley of hues and pigments. So what gives weed its diverse array of visual tones , and what strains should you seek out when hoping for that perfect purple nug? We’ve got you covered. How Does Weed Get Its Color? Like most plants in nature, cannabis is packed full of chlorophyll , or a chemical compound that uses the sun to generate energy for plants. And so the same thing that makes your grassy lawn sparkle is also what turns your Sour Diesel green. But what about strains that end up with purple, red, pink, or even black hues? For those, we need to dive even deeper into plant science. The colorful culprits are anthocyanins , a...

The Feds Want Help Determining a Standard Dose for THC
(Cannabis, CBD, Edibles, Education, Oils, Products, Research, Science, Scientific Research, THC) How much THC is too much? How much is too little? As cannabis continues to move further into the American mainstream, different states have created different rules for THC potency limits and product specifications. Now, before the plant is even legal at a federal level, the National Institute for Drug Abuse (NIDA) is looking to designate a standardized THC dose to aid in cannabis research. According to a new report from Marijuana Moment , the NIDA published a notice early this week calling for advice from “the scientific research community and any other interested parties” to help determine a replicable THC dosage standard that could be used to better inform cannabis policy and science or medical research. “As the diversity of products, potency, and use of cannabis increase, research grows ever more critical to determine both the adverse health effects and therapeutic potential of cannabis and its constituents,” the NIDA open call reads . “Recognizing that a perfect measure may not be...

Did the Mayor of Raleigh, NC Accidentally Post a Photo of Her Weed Vape?
(Cannabis, CBD, Containers, Food, Legalization, Media, Medical Marijuana, North Carolina, Oils, Social Media, United States, THC) Photo via Like the rest of us, Raleigh, North Carolina Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin is doing her best to stay inside. But in a recent social media post of her family in quarantine with take-out food — to support local restaurants without gathering in groups, of course — it appears like the crew is consuming more than just delivery. In the corner of the photo, you can see what looks like a marijuana vape pen that was accidentally left in the frame. Here is what we did tonight to support our local restaurants. Take out from Garland. And we left a 35 percent tip. Please do the same. pic.twitter.com/SI21NAvV8U — Mary-Ann Baldwin (@maryannbaldwin) March 15, 2020 That’s right, behind containers of roti, lamb shank, and a tofu rice bowl, Mayor Baldwin’s Twitter photo included a 510 vape battery connected to what appears to be a cannabis distillate vape cartridge. Florida: Adult Use Hopes Are Dead For 2020. But It’s Not the End
(Cannabis, Florida, Growing, Law, Legalization, Medical Marijuana, Production, Products, Regulations, Seed to Sale, United States, Vertical Integration, Vertical Integration, THC) Earlier in 2020, legal adult use cannabis in Florida appeared likely to become a reality by year’s end. After a well-funded legalization campaign failed to gather enough support or signatures for the 2020 ballot, advocates turned their attention to the state capitol. But a bill to legalize cannabis for adult use, which would have shaken up Florida’s existing medical cannabis industry, died last week without a single hearing. Still, its sponsor vows to press ahead. So does that well-funded group, which is now aiming to put a constitutional amendment on the 2022 ballot. The legislative measure— SB 1860 —would have legalized cannabis for adults aged twenty-one and older and ended Florida’s vertical integration regulatory scheme for medical cannabis. The state’s current medical cannabis operators are required to control every aspect of production and retail, from seed to sale, which some argue unfairly benefits large companies. This regulation, meanwhile, is also at the heart of a legal...
