Learn To Marijuana Like a Pro While You’re on Virus Lockdown
(Beverage, Cannabis, Education, Grower, Growing, Science, THC Farmaceuticals, Inc, THC, Cultivation) If you are reading this, chances are you are hunkered down somewhere, like the rest of America, just wondering when or if civil society will rise above this gnarly virus and get back to normal. But after taking in just 30 seconds of the daily press conferences held by the White House, it is plain to see there isn’t much hope that day is coming anytime soon. Although President Donald Trump claims there isn’t a need for a national lockdown, and he’s even mentioned that he might let the country ditch all of this social distancing stuff to keep economies from tanking, many states have still instituted “stay at home” orders to keep the population at home. It means that millions of people, just like you, are hanging around the house, bored out of their skulls. At first, it was sort of like an extended vacation, but now that you’ve cleaned all of your bongs, built a couple of new ones, and possibly even engineered a new cannabis strain called “Corona-B-Gone,” there isn’t much else to do...

Can Cannabinoids Treat COVID-19 Symptoms? Canadian Scientists Want to Find Out
(Canada, Cannabis, CBD, Edibles, Medical Marijuana, Science, Topicals, THC) As the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread around the world, scientists and researchers are scrambling for answers about what type of drug regimens could help slow or stop the illness. But while some government leaders have already been cavalier about announcing potential treatments , at least one Canadian doctor wants to run clinical trials on cannabinoids to find out if the cannabis compounds can help COVID-19 patients reduce inflammation and boost their immune systems. “What we know from medical cannabis over the course of the literature and the experience we’ve had in Canada over the years is that there are known anti-inflammatory properties that cannabinoids have — cannabinoids being the active ingredients that come from the cannabis plant,” Dr. Mohan Cooray, president and CEO of the physician-led online medical cannabis retailer Cannalogue told The Toronto Sun . “On top of that, we know from a medical standpoint that these active ingredients have immunomodulatory properties...

NY State Catholic Conference Firmly Opposed To Cannabis Legalization
(Cannabis, Development, Education, Law, Legalization, Medical Marijuana, New York, Recreational, Regulations, Science, United States) The New York State Catholic Conference on Monday indicated its opposition to a bill that would legalize the sale and use of recreational marijuana. “New York’s medical, education and law enforcement communities have urged the state to reject recreational marijuana legalization, and so does the New York State Catholic Conference,” the conference said in a March 23 memo. The Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act is currently in committee, and has been supported by Gov. Andrew Cuomo as part of his proposed budget. The governor has said it would generate $300 million in tax revenue. “There are many policy issues that I laid out back in January and we’re going to pursue all of them,” he said, according to The Post-Star. Medical marijuana has been legal in New York since 2014. The Catholic conference noted that the state is now “in the grips of the coronavirus pandemic, and said that “it would be the height of irresponsibility for the state to legalize a substance designed to be inhaled...

Massachusetts Reinforces Support for the Medical Necessity Model
(California, Cannabis, Cannabis and Hemp, Development, Education, Facilities, GSML, Hemp, Hemp Industries, Illinois, Law, Management, Massachusetts, Medical Marijuana, Michigan, New York, Recreational, Regulations, Science, Testing, United States, Washington, Dispensaries, Cultivation, Intellectual Property) As more and more states are shifting to a work-from-home environment and closing down non-essential businesses, we have seen a conflict in gubernatorial instructions on whether cannabis is a protected class of business that falls under “essential infrastructure” or “essential business.” Earlier this week, we compared the approach New York and California have taken to permitting businesses to continue to operate. The former, medical-only state received a carte blanche endorsement as an essential business in New York to provide (often immunocompromised) patients with necessary medication. California, on the other hand, remained silent in executive orders, and left it up to local mayoral representatives to make determinations as they saw fit and best for their respective communities. Massachusetts has taken a middle road, as Governor Charles D. Baker issued COVID-19 Order No. 13 on March 23, 2020 which becomes effective March 24, 2020 at noon. This order identified an extensive list of “...

Is Pharmaceutical CBD More Effective Than Herb?
(Cannabis, CBD, Growers, GW Pharmaceuticals plc, Legalization, Research, Science, Self-Contained Growing Systems, United States, Washington, Washington DC, THC, Extracts, Pharmaceuticals, Cultivation) Many studies point to the unwanted side effects of pharmaceutical CBD but this one says it’s more effective. CBD offers much medicinal promise, be it pharmaceutical or artisanal. Free of dangerous side effects, its potent anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, and anxiolytic abilities make it the subject of much scientific inquiry. Further, financial experts expect the cannabis market to reach over seventy billion dollars by 2027. With so much money at stake, it’s little surprise that several competing industries are attempting to benefit from future projections. Big Pharma, who opt for isolated and refined extracts from the plant, are currently jostling for market position with growers and small producers who believe in the more holistic artisanal forms of cannabis. The Efficacy of Pharmaceutical CBD Approved by the FDA in 2018, Epidiolex is the first pharmaceutical CBD solution to receive approval. CBD still remains a schedule 1 substance in the U.S., but that only applies to those...

Clean Grow Still Failing? Check for Endophytic Mold
(Cannabis, Clothing, Facilities, Genetics, Grow Facilities, Growers, Growing, Hemp, Management, Production, Products, Research, Science, Testing, Cultivation) The journal Frontiers in Plant Science recently shared an important article from researchers at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, highlighting the “Pathogens and Molds Affecting Production and Quality of Cannabis Sativa.” As a chemist focused on the science of preventing and mitigating mold in greenhouse and indoor cannabis grow facilities, this piece was fascinating to me. Like many others, it details and explains prevalent mold like Penicillium, Cladosporium and Aspergillus – things I see in grows every day. But wait, there’s more fungi The research and resulting article also brought up another type of fungi – endophytic mold. Endophytic mold usually lives symbiotically with plants, or is at least beneficial for both plant and fungi. But not always. In the past, the industry has believed that damaging mold spores were found on the outside of the flower. When moved, that flower would release the spores and send them flying – often creating massive cross-contamination...

Have You Tried a THC Salve for Your Itchy Skin?
(Cannabis, CBD, Cosmetics, Production, Research, Science, Topicals, THC) Cannabinoids can potentially help skin disorders. But can a THC salve help reduce itchiness? And, which cannabinoid works best for pruritus? The research is still early, but scientific studies are showing us that cannabis can potentially help alleviate hard-to-treat skin disorders, like psoriasis, acne and eczema. These disorders are inflammatory in nature, which is one of the ways cannabinoids are able to help, particularly CBD . But could cannabis — specifically a THC salve — also help with pruritus or itchiness? While there hasn’t been much research into this topic, there are a few things we do know about cannabis treatment and itch relief. And, coupled with scientific knowledge about the endocannabinoid system itself, we can glean a few ideas on how cannabis could help. Topical Cannabis Reduces Dryness and Redness Research has shown that cannabis creams can interact with endocannabinoid receptors in the skin, and that they could also potentially help with acne and redness. THC...

What Are the Most Colorful Weed Strains and How Do They Get Their Hues?
(California, Canada, Cannabis, Genetics, Growers, Growing, Production, Research, Science, Strains, United States, THC, Cultivation) For cannabis connoisseurs, the intoxicating effects of THC are only one aspect of the overall marijuana experience. Past the high, there’s the scent, the taste, the bud structure, and of course, the colors. From vibrant green buds and strains that are undeniably “purp,” to flower varietals with bright red and orange hairs, cannabis cultivars can embody a whole medley of hues and pigments. So what gives weed its diverse array of visual tones , and what strains should you seek out when hoping for that perfect purple nug? We’ve got you covered. How Does Weed Get Its Color? Like most plants in nature, cannabis is packed full of chlorophyll , or a chemical compound that uses the sun to generate energy for plants. And so the same thing that makes your grassy lawn sparkle is also what turns your Sour Diesel green. But what about strains that end up with purple, red, pink, or even black hues? For those, we need to dive even deeper into plant science. The colorful culprits are anthocyanins , a...

The Feds Want Help Determining a Standard Dose for THC
(Cannabis, CBD, Edibles, Education, Oils, Products, Research, Science, Scientific Research, THC) How much THC is too much? How much is too little? As cannabis continues to move further into the American mainstream, different states have created different rules for THC potency limits and product specifications. Now, before the plant is even legal at a federal level, the National Institute for Drug Abuse (NIDA) is looking to designate a standardized THC dose to aid in cannabis research. According to a new report from Marijuana Moment , the NIDA published a notice early this week calling for advice from “the scientific research community and any other interested parties” to help determine a replicable THC dosage standard that could be used to better inform cannabis policy and science or medical research. “As the diversity of products, potency, and use of cannabis increase, research grows ever more critical to determine both the adverse health effects and therapeutic potential of cannabis and its constituents,” the NIDA open call reads . “Recognizing that a perfect measure may not be...

Don’t Hold Your Breath
(Cannabis, CBD, CBN, Cigarettes, Science, Strains, THC) Don’t hold it in! The idea that holding in your smoke hit makes you higher is probably the biggest misconception in cannabis culture. It has been proven that absorption of THC in the lungs occurs within milliseconds of inhalation. It was most likely was orginally a stoner’s idea. To start out debunking the myth and setting the record straight on not holding your breath in as long as you can after hitting an inhaled cannabis product, I read my first agreement article in Debunking The Myth Of Holding A Hit Of Marijuana from January 2018: Surely you have witnessed this numerous times. Maybe you even do it yourself. Firing up a joint, taking a few hits, you proceed to pass the joint along to your friends while holding the hit in. It is the standard no-cost approach to getting higher, right? Hold the smoke in for longer, and the body will have extra time to absorb more THC through the lung’s alveoli. Unfortunately, despite the apparent logical reasoning behind this notion, this theory does...

On the High End
(Branding, California, Cannabis, CBD, Education, Genetics, Grower, Growers, Growing, Investment, New York, Organic, Products, Regulations, Science, Spain, Strains, Testing, United States, Vaporizers, THC, Dispensaries, Cultivation, Intellectual Property) In the early 2000s, that golden age of Proposition 215 cannabis in California, Mario “Mr. Sherbinski” Guzman was a regular supplier for San Francisco’s legendary Vapor Room. Back then, nobody had heard the name Sherbinski and the notion of a cannabis brand was still an abstraction. Today, nearly two decades later, his company Sherbinskis is on the short list of still-relevant adult-use brands with uninterrupted roots in California’s self-regulated 215 market. But before Sherbinski’s cannabis was getting name-dropped in rap hits and sold through fancy department stores, Afgoo cold water hash washed from Sherbinski bud by the man himself was a menu staple at the Vapor Room , and a crucial part of my daily routine. For years, the best part of waking up was smoking a bowl of chocolate-black bubble hash with a cup of tar-black coffee on a rickety fire escape overlooking the intersection of Oak and Fillmore streets. (California, Cannabis, CBD, Legalization, Research, Science, United States, THC) Photo via Southern California has long been known as one of the cannabis industry’s main focal points. Now, thanks to legalization and subsequent research initiatives at local universities, SoCal has quickly emerged as a hub for cannabis science, as well. According to a new press release from the UCLA Newsroom , the university’s two-year-old Cannabis Research Initiative was recently awarded a $3.9 million grant from the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health at the National Institute of Health to study the effects of cannabis terpenes on chronic pain. The money will also fund research into whether the all-natural flavonoids can help opioid users reduce their necessary dosage. “Chronic pain is a significant public health burden and there are few effective treatments...

Kansas: Grand jury subpoena sought records of four Missouri medical marijuana applicants
(Cannabis, Consulting, Education, Kansas, Law, Medical Marijuana, Missouri, Production, Regulations, Science, United States, Real Estate) This sounds like an unravelling story of state politics and influence.. we shall keep an eye on this one. The Kansas City Star reports.…….A federal grand jury late last year demanded the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services turn over all records pertaining to medical marijuana license applications of four individuals, according to a subpoena obtained by The Star. All four names were redacted by the department in The Star’s copy of the document. The first page of the subpoena requests that the department not publicly disclose the names because “it would be harmful to our investigation should these subjects be notified in any way of this request.” The subpoena was issued by the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri in November 2019. The Star received a copy on Monday in response to a request under Missouri’s Sunshine Law. According to the subpoena, the department had until Jan. 7, 2020 to turn over to the grand jury any records in its possession...
