STZ's take on Canopy - 3 April 2020
(Batteries, Beverage, Canada, Cannabis, CGC, Edibles, Products, Soda, Tweed Marijuana Inc, TWMJF) Finally, we're very encouraged by the steps David Klein is taking in his new role as CEO of Canopy Growth. David and the Canopy team recently announced their focus on four key areas, improving Canopy's connection with consumers, instilling greater focus and discipline across the organization, defining visible path for profitability and positive cash flow, and building the Company's credibility with key stakeholders. Canopy continues to be the global leader in total cannabis sales, with a leading market share in Canada. The Company recently took steps to right size its business to better align with consumer demand and position the Company for long-term success. Canopy just launched its first cannabis beverage product, Tweed Houndstooth & Soda, which has received an overwhelmingly positive consumer response. And they plan to roll out additional beverage products over the next few months. And I can tell you, they are awfully good. These are game-changers. They also have completed...…

Cannabis Consumer Behavior Alters With Covid-19 Quarantine: Edibles & Drinks Surge
(Alcohol, Beverage, Cannabis, Drinks, Edibles, Events, Marketing, Packaging, Products, Topicals, United States) So many things have been turned upside down with this pandemic, and saying we live in interesting times would be an understatement. Industries and businesses are being demolished and altered in ways unheard of just a month ago, and a rare few are actually booming. For the cannabis industry, one of the biggest changes leading to a boom is that as a whole cannabis is now being considered an “essential” part of life nationwide. The level of legitimacy this brings to the industry would have normally taken another decade. Delivery services and curb side pick-up have been implemented across the country also erasing years of necessary effort overnight. But overall, the complete change in cannabis consumer behavior has been one of the most interesting developments to witness for many of us. As reported by Vice , politics and current events are major sources of anxiety for many in the United States and this leads to an increase of unhealthy behaviors like drinking alcohol, smoking, or eating...…

(L)Earning from Failure
(Acquisition, Cannabis, Development, Domains, Investment, Investors, Product Development, Production, Products, Research, Science, Security) The spectacular rise and crash of the Canadian cannabis stock market has been painful to watch, let alone to experience as an industry insider. The hype around the market has vanished and many investors are left disappointed. Large sustainable gains simply haven’t materialized as promised. The producers are clearly suffering. They have consistently been shedding value as they’ve been posting losses every quarter. Stock prices have plummeted along with consumer confidence. Attempts to reduce the cash bleeds through mergers, acquisitions, layoffs, restructures, fund raises, among others, have not resulted in any significant recovery. In short, the current model of a cannabis industry has failed. Dr. Markus Roggen, Founder of Complex Biotech Discovery Ventures (CBDV) How could it have been different? What should the industry have done differently? What makes the difference between failure and success? A recent article published in Nature (Volume 575) by Yin et al. titled “Quantifying the...

Illinois Sold Even More Weed in March Than February, Despite COVID-19 Lockdown
(California, Cannabis, Illinois, Indiana, Law, Massachusetts, Medical Marijuana, Netherlands, Nevada, Products, Regulations, United States, Dispensaries) Cannabis sales in Illinois have soared since the Prairie State legalized adult-use weed sales in January . The state's legal weed market seems so robust, in fact, that the coronavirus pandemic isn't even slowing it down. Last month, even as state and local governments ordered residents to remain in their homes, demand for legal weed remained strong. According to a preliminary report from the state Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, adult-use shops sold more than 812,000 legal weed products in March, amounting to nearly $36 million in total sales. “Three straight months of consistent adult-use cannabis sales show there is — and will continue to be — strong support and demand from consumers,” said Toi Hutchinson, Governor Pritzker's top cannabis advisor, according to Marijuana Moment . On March 21, Governor J.B. Pritzker issued a stay-at-home order mandating that all non-essential businesses close in order to stop the spread of COVID-19 infections. The governor wisely...…

Canada: medical cannabis is essential • Canopy’s board transformation • Australia’s cannabis access review • & more…
(Alcohol, Australia, Canada, Cannabis, CGC, Medical Marijuana, Processing, Products, Regulations) The Cannabis Wire Daily newsletter is sent to C-Wire Plus subscribers every weekday morning at 7 a.m. Excerpts are published here later in the day. Don’t miss the full picture. Subscribe now . Canopy Growth’s board transformation is complete. And then there were none. And by none we mean none of the pre-Constellation board members at Canopy Growth. Ever since the alcohol giant invested $4 billion into the Canadian cannabis company, one of the largest in the world, one-by-one the original Canopy executives and board members have been replaced. The one that made the headlines was the ouster last year of Canopy co-founder and CEO Bruce Linton. He was subsequently replaced by David Klein, who stepped in, unsurprisingly, from Constellation. Yesterday, Canopy announced that John Bell and Peter Stringham, the last two remaining pre-Constellation board members, would “retire” from the board. (Acquisition, Acreage Holdings, ACRGF, California, Cannabis, Facilities, Helix Technologies, HLIX, Illinois, Iowa, Management, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Processing, Products, Rhode Island, United States, Washington, Dispensaries, Cultivation, Security) Acreage Holdings, Inc. (CSE: ACRG.U) (OTCQX: ACRGF) has hit the reset button as the company lays off 122 employees and kills the Deep Roots among other measures. The company blamed the COVID19 virus and other “uncontrollable factors.” The company also said it was suspending its previous 2020 financial targets and will provide a more detailed update on its first-quarter earnings call tentatively scheduled for May 13, 2020. “Although we are facing difficult times, I remain optimistic about the U.S. cannabis industry and Acreage in particular,” said Acreage Chair and Chief Executive Officer, Kevin Murphy. “But as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have made the very difficult decision to furlough several of our employees and close certain facilities while we navigate through the crisis. Additionally, we withdrew from certain agreements with Deep Roots and Greenleaf as circumstances have materially changed. These bold measures will help to ensure that we emerge from this very...…

The FDA Crackdown on Coronavirus Medical Claims: CBD Companies, Take Note!
(Advertising, Cannabis, CBD, Development, Idaho, Marketing, Media, Product Development, Products, Social Media, United States, Websites) Unfortunately, in times of crisis and hardship there will always be companies attempting to take advantage of people, playing off of fear and desperation. Earlier this month, the FDA sent out a round of warning letters to companies that were selling fraudulent COVID-19 products. We’ve written extensively about what CBD companies should not do if they want to avoid FDA scrutiny, as well as the scrutiny that CBD companies have already received. And although none of the letters sent out in this round of FDA enforcement specifically referenced CBD products, at least one of the companies targeted does sell CBD products, and we have heard anecdotal reports of CBD companies making dubious statements related to the coronavirus that may or may not rise to the level of medical claims. In light of the foregoing, we thought it would be helpful to lay out the nature of the claims being made related to COVID-19 that the FDA will not tolerate, and to review the basics of labeling and advertising...

Passion for Medical Cannabis Fuels AAA Pharmaceutical Alternatives’ Transition to Maine’s Adult-Use Market: The Starting Line
(Cannabis, CBD, Maine, Manufacturing, Medical Marijuana, Products, Testing, United States, Vertically Integrated, THC, Pharmaceuticals, Cultivation) As a medical cannabis patient and caregiver, Aaron “Roy” Scalia understands the power cannabis has to benefit those who are suffering. After sustaining a brain injury in a motorcycle accident in 2002, Scalia turned to medical cannabis during his recovery, and in 2015, he founded AAA Pharmaceutical Alternatives as a licensed medical caregiver to serve patients in central Maine.“Through the use of CBD and THC, I’ve been able to really cope with everything that I’ve been faced with and because of that, I’m able to help others,” Scalia tells Cannabis Business Times. “People can relate because they may have had an accident or they’ve been through trauma in their lives, [and] we can share our stories. … I can talk about things that helped me and a lot of times, it helps them.”When Maine voters legalized adult-use cannabis in 2016, Scalia saw it as an opportunity to expand his reach beyond the state’s registered patient base.“We’ve been servicing people in the medical marijuana care industry...…

(Canada, Cannabis, Facilities, Grower, Growers, IIPR, Innovative Industrial Properties, Investments, Leases, Production, Products, Stocks, Vertically Integrated, VFF, Village Farms, Village Farms International, Cultivation) As of midday on April 2nd, marijuana stocks have so far had quite a rally. Top companies in the industry such as Tilray have shot up by as much as 12% during the day, before climbing back to a respectable 2% gain. New York has recorded by far the highest numbers of positive tests and deaths in the country. But before the spread of coronavirus, New York was on track to legalize, and perhaps lead the entire northeast in a coordinated approach with neighboring states like Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Cuomo, who tried to legalize through the budget in 2019, too, said this January when he announced his legislative priorities during his budget address that he believes the budget process is “the opportunity, frankly, to make some tough decisions and work through tough issues that without the budget can often languish.” In the early months of 2020, a flurry of entities filed disclosures that indicated they were lobbying on cannabis issues. (TASE: PNAX) said that it completed a successful fundraising round of 17 million ILS (Israeli shekels) or approximately $4.6 million by today’s currency exchange. The private placement consists of common stock and warrants to Israeli Institutional Investors: the provident funds, mutual funds, and portfolio management entities of Mor Investment House and Noked Capital Hedge Fund. Total gross proceeds raised, including the exercise of the option by the company, are 23 million ILS. In connection with the offering, the company issued 6,319,703 shares of the company’s common stock at a purchase price per share of 2.69 ILS, and warrants to purchase an additional 5,055,762 shares of...

Congresswoman Wants Recreational Marijuana Stores Open To Serve Veterans Amid Coronavirus Outbreak
(Cannabis, Law, Loans, Massachusetts, Medical Marijuana, Products, Recreational, United States, Washington, Dispensaries, Recreational Cannabis) A congresswoman is raising concern that a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) policy prohibiting its doctors from recommending medical marijuana to patients means that military veterans could be especially impacted by her home state’s decision to shut down recreational cannabis shops amid the coronavirus outbreak. Rep. Katherine Clark (D-MA) raised the issue in a tweet, linking to a story about a veterans advocacy group that is calling on Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker (D) to reopen adult-use shops so that veterans can continue to obtain marijuana products more readily and without fear of being penalized. While medical cannabis dispensaries remain open in the state, the Veterans Cannabis Project said service members often resist registering as patients out of concern about losing federal benefits. Getting certified as medical cannabis patients can also take time and money that many veterans don’t have. In contrast, any adult over 21 years of age can walk into a recreational...…

Want Shrooms That Never Cause Bad Trips? Scientists Are Working On It
(Cannabis, CBD, Germany, Products, Regulations, United States, Washington, THC, Pharmaceuticals) Have you ever experienced a challenging trip from eating too many shrooms or eating them at the wrong time? Or with the wrong people? A group of scientists think they can change that by designing magic mushroom products that will never, ever cause a bad trip. CaaMTech , a pharmaceutical company based in Washington State, claims that aeruginascin, a compound only found in the Inocybe aeruginascens mushroom , could hold the key to reducing anxiety, paranoia, dysphoria, or otherwise any experience that equates to a bad time while tripping on shrooms. In other words, as Troy Farah wrote for DoubleBlind magazine, aeruginascin is to shrooms what CBD is to weed. Just as CBD can taper, or dampen, the frenetic effects of THC from cannabis, aeruginascin could do the same for the psychedelic experiences caused by the psilocybin, psilocin , and baeocystin found in shrooms. “We’re thinking that preventing bad trips could increase the patient success rate,” Andrew Chadeayne, the CEO and founder of...…

Cops Are Still Busting Weed Grows in the Middle of the Coronavirus Pandemic
(California, Cannabis, Extraction, Law, Oklahoma, Products, United States, Soil) Photo via Across the globe, police forces are adjusting to law and order under a viral pandemic. Court rooms are closed, judges and lawyers are largely holed up at home, and for police in large cities, beat cops have prioritized enforcing quarantine orders over petty crime stops. But when it comes to black market marijuana enforcement, tearing pot plants out of soil is apparently more important than protecting officers and suspects from spreading COVID-19. According to KFOR News , police in Harrah, Oklahoma raided a home grow site, confiscated 2,600 cannabis plants, and arrested at least two suspects in what cops are describing as a $1.3 million weed bust. In addition to the “multiple arrests” made at the grow site, local cops said that they are still pursuing additional suspects. Initial news reports made no mention of the ongoing global pandemic or dire conditions in the country’s crowded jails . Similarly, California cops have executed their own share of black market cannabis raids...…
