Effective Measures to Boost Your Energy Levels
(Cannabis, Food) The human body uses energy for every function that happens internally and externally through physical activity. So, therefore, processes such as thinking, sleeping, walking, and even digesting food require a good supply of energy (or calories), which, of course, comes from the food we eat. It is important that we keep our energy levels in check because of the impact this has on internal processes, such as building, repairing, and maintaining cells, as well as facilitating waste removal. Water, an essential element, also determines how the body uses energy, mainly because of its role in the ... Doctor Calls for "Temporary Approval" of Psychedelics to Treat COVID-19 Trauma
(Food, United States, Wisconsin) This week, a psychiatrist called on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to grant “temporary approval” for psychedelic therapies to help patients struggling to deal with the coronavirus pandemic. On Wednesday, Dr. Morgan Campbell, a resident psychiatrist based in Wisconsin, wrote an opinion piece for the Sacramento Bee asking the FDA to bypass its standard approval protocols so therapists can immediately begin administering psychedelics such as MDMA (“ecstasy”), LSD, and psilocybin (“magic mushrooms”) to patients suffering from depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress (PTSD) exacerbated or caused by the COVID-19 crisis. In fact, Campbell noted that FDA approvals are long overdue. “Twenty years of trials for psilocybin, and 10 years for MDMA, show that they outperform currently approved medications for depression and PTSD,” he wrote . “Because of how many years MDMA and psilocybin have been tested for safety and efficacy, there is better quality evidence for these psychedelics...

Who Lobbied on Cannabis in New York During the Latest Legalization Push?
(Acreage Holdings, ACRGF, Alcohol, Bar, California, Cannabis, CBD, CGC, Colorado, Connecticut, Food, Growers, GW Pharmaceuticals plc, GWPH, Hemp, Investment, Law, Legalization, Massachusetts, Medical Marijuana, Michigan, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Products, Regulations, TBD, United States, Vireo, Vireo, Vireo Health, VREOF, Extracts, Pharmaceuticals, Cultivation) The effort to legalize adult use cannabis through New York’s budget process fizzled this week after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Tuesday that there’s just “too much, too little time,” given the COVID-19 outbreak in the state. New York has recorded by far the highest numbers of positive tests and deaths in the country. But before the spread of coronavirus, New York was on track to legalize, and perhaps lead the entire northeast in a coordinated approach with neighboring states like Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Cuomo, who tried to legalize through the budget in 2019, too, said this January when he announced his legislative priorities during his budget address that he believes the budget process is “the opportunity, frankly, to make some tough decisions and work through tough issues that without the budget can often languish.” In the early months of 2020, a flurry of entities filed disclosures that indicated they were lobbying on cannabis issues. Some focused on lawmakers,...

Weed Wisdom: Swami Select’s Tips for Getting High Alone in the Age of COVID-19
(Cannabis, Cleaning, Food, Videos, Lights) Photos courtesy of Swami Select As we know, unusual times call for unusually creative measures — and that’s the case for spring 2020 amidst the coronavirus pandemic. So, there you are, stuck at home, alone or just with your partner, family, or housemates. You scored a good stash of weed to keep you going. You hopefully have a good supply of food and entertainment, too. But, still, it’s just odd not to go out and share that tasty bud with your friends in the world, at a concert, a house party, or just about anywhere else outside. The good news, however, is that you have your medicine and can still get high. When we get elevated at home alone, it is a whole other beast than when doing the same while out socializing. The first thing to do is get cozy in a comfy space. Without all the distractions, you can truly focus on the experience and let it carry you away. As the stoned effects come on, sit back, and be at peace. Tune in to the sounds around you — sounds you most probably have never...

(Canada, Cannabis, Compliance, Containers, Development, Financing, Food, Growing, Investment, Investors, Israel, Management, Marketing, Medical Marijuana, Production, Products, Research, SPRWF, Pharmaceuticals, Cultivation, Hedge Fund) Israel has been the center of some of the strongest research on cannabis, but for years remained in the research only field. We’ll continue to update as regulators announce new policies. So far, during the COVID-19 pandemic, cannabis sales are through the roof as consumers stock up in anticipation of supply chain disruption. But, despite this upswing, cannabis companies are bracing for impact. As Cannabis Wire reported this week, a dilemma has hit the nascent industry: to close or not to close? Already, Canopy Growth chose to close nearly two dozen shops in Canada, and we’re tracking how other companies are reacting. But what happens in the case of forced closures? Cannabis regulators will have to weigh tough decisions in the coming days as businesses, from gyms to bowling alleys to bars, are asked to close as part of broader efforts to contain the spread of the virus. (While Canadian consumers can legally order cannabis online, should closures occur, changes are taking place north of the border. On...

USDA Approves Hemp Plans For South Carolina And West Virginia
(Cannabis, CBD, Food, Georgia, Hemp, Legalization, Montana, Production, Regulations, South Carolina, Testing, United States, Virginia, West Virginia, THC) The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced on Tuesday that is approved hemp regulatory plans for two additional states and three more Indian tribes. South Carolina and West Virginia are the latest to have their proposals approved since the crop was federally legalized under the 2018 Farm Bill. That raises the total number of approved state plans to 14. Last month, USDA accepted proposed regulations from Georgia and Montana . Additionally, the Oglala Sioux Tribe, the Seneca Nation of Indians and the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians also had their proposals authorized. Now there are 17 approved tribal plans. “USDA continues to receive and review hemp production plans from states and Indian tribes,” the department said . While USDA considers changes to an interim final rule for hemp that it released last year, it has systematically been approving plans submitted by states and tribes . Industry stakeholders have said they appreciate USDA’s commitment to continuing to...

The Feds Are Offering Grants to Study How Coronavirus Impacts Cannabis Consumers
(Cannabis, CBD, Exploring, Food, Legalization, Medical Marijuana, Research, Tobacco, Funding) The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) recently announced that it will fund research into how the coronavirus pandemic is affecting users of cannabis, tobacco, or other drugs . The agency is planning to offer two separate grants to researchers who are willing to study how drug users may be uniquely impacted by coronavirus infections. “As people across the US and the rest of the world prepare for what could be a pandemic of the 2019 novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, the research community should be alert to the possibility that it could affect some populations with substance use disorders or HIV particularly hard,” NIDA wrote in a Notice of Special Interest last month . “Because it attacks the lungs, COVID-19 could be an especially serious threat to those with histories of smoking tobacco or marijuana or of vaping.” The notice also explains that users of opioids or methamphetamines may also be especially vulnerable to coronavirus, as these drugs weaken the immune system and increase...

FDA Warns Former NFL Player To Stop Claiming CBD Can Cure Coronavirus
(Advertising, Cannabis, CBD, Compliance, Food, Legalization, Marketing, Media, Products, Regulations, Research, Social Media, United States, Websites, Funding) The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) have taken enforcement action against a former NFL player’s CBD company over unsubstantiated claims that its products can be used to cure or prevent coronavirus. The agencies sent a warning letter demanding that Kyle Turley’s NeuroXPF business cease making the claims, remove them from any marketing material and advise FDA on steps taken to correct the issue within 48 hours. Failure to comply can result in “legal action, including, without limitation, seizure and injunction,” the letter states. The enforcement action came one day after Turley told Marijuana Moment in an interview that he would actually welcome federal moves against his company and use it as a public relations opportunity to expose the government for suppressing the “truth” about the medical potential of cannabis. He shared a screenshot of the letter on Tuesday and said “WE DID IT!!!!” WE DID IT!!!! pic.twitter.com/wiRaK9Ojcu — KT (@KyleTurley)...

(California, Cannabis, Cannabis and Hemp, CBD, CF, Compliance, Development, Financing, Food, Hemp, Investing, Investment, Investors, Law, Loans, Massachusetts, Medical Marijuana, Production, Products, Regulations, Science, United States, Dispensaries, Funding, Security) The rapid and devastating proliferation of COVID-19 has affected businesses worldwide, and cannabis is no exception. Here in California (and in other states), the state announced that medical cannabis dispensaries are essential and may remain open as part of the state’s Stay-At-Home order. The medical cannabis businesses that supply those dispensaries are also essential under that order. In addition, certain cities in California (like Los Angeles and San Francisco) have their own shelter-in-place or stay-at-home orders that also identify medical cannabis businesses and the businesses that supply them as essential. Unless a city or a county says otherwise, the state’s Stay-At-Home order protects the operation of medical cannabis businesses throughout the state. With medical cannabis businesses allowed to stay open and operational across the country during COVID-19, sales of medical cannabis to consumers has been on a tear. While increased medical cannabis sales and production is a...

Arizona Issues “Stay-At-Home” Order Starting March 31 to Fight Coronavirus
(Arizona, Biotechnology, Cannabis, Cleaning, Distribution, Education, Facilities, Food, Management, Media, Medical Marijuana, Production, Products, Research, United States, Dispensaries, Real Estate, Security) Numerous states throughout the U.S. have been put on “stay-at-home” orders restricting residents to their homes except for when traveling to or from “essential” businesses. Arizona has now joined those states with a mandatory stay-at-home order that is effective from March 31 at 5pm until April 30, ABC 15 reported. And it’s possible that Governor Ducey could extend the lockdown past April 30. Ducey said the “Stay Home, Stay Healthy, Stay Connected” order was created to promote “physical distancing, while also encouraging social connectedness.” Fortunately, Arizona medical marijuana dispensaries have been deemed essential by the state because they provide medicine, which is essential to Arizonans. Many dispensaries have implemented safety precautions to prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). For example, most offer online ordering, pick-up and/or delivery services, are using personal protective equipment, restrict the amount of patients allowed inside, and frequently disinfect...

Home Office HACCP During COVID-19
(Australia, Cannabis, Cleaning, Food, Monitoring, Testing, Security) With much of the world shutting down and many of us forced to take refuge behind our own doors, we have some time to reflect on what actions led to this. There has been, in my opinion, a clear disconnect between our actions and health outcomes. We need to bridge this gap; We now have a moment to build that bridge. We can start by reassessing our endpoint measurement of health and disease and focusing on what leading measures will impact our lagging results. Think of it as HACCP-lite or home office HACCP. Small changes in the way we think and behave can lead to significant change. Lagging measures – Lagging measures make great headlines and typically measure an outcome. These are easily quantifiable and therefore receive a good deal of the focus. Leading measures – Leading measures are inputs that happen during the process and in advance of an outcome. Leading measures are often difficult to quantify. This week, Nathan started a “Germ Jar” activity with his kids to track washing. We...

Former NFL Player Under Fire For Claiming CBD Can Cure Coronavirus
(Advertising, Cannabis, CBD, Food, Legalization, Louisiana, Marketing, Products, Research, United States) Former NFL player Kyle Turley believes CBD can prevent and cure coronavirus—and he’s not backing down on that clinically unsubstantiated claim despite pushback from marijuana legalization supporters and prohibitionists alike. In fact, he accused those advocates of cowardice, alleging in an interview with Marijuana Moment that they’re afraid of the consequences of spreading what he claims is the “truth” about cannabis. He also said he would welcome Food and Drug Administration (FDA) enforcement against his CBD company over these COVID-19 claims and would use such an action as an opportunity to expose the government for covering up the medical potential of the plant. In a series of tweets in recent weeks, Turley has repeatedly hawked CBD products, arguing that because the compound interacts with the endocannabinoid system, which plays some role in regulating the immune system, they can be used to prevent and cure coronavirus. The answer is yes, but proceed with caution. The limited scientific evidence available on CBD for other animals suggests that Cannabidiol may be beneficial for dogs in treating symptoms of anxiety or pain. But, many dog owners have questions around which cannabinoids and terpenes to avoid, proper dosing, and methods of administration. Here’s what every pet owner should consider about research into, “Can I give CBD to my Dog?” 1) THC is Dangerous for Dogs so no Sharing Bud Dogs getting their paws on cannabis is a much more common occurrence than many might think. When owners carelessly leave their stash lying around, dogs are inclined to stick their nose in and chew it down. As a result, many owners unintentionally give their pets toxic doses of THC. People frequently wonder how there can even be THC in raw bud. This is due to the nature of degradation of cannabis over time. At all points in time, exposure to elements, like heat and light, will cause THCa to...

Glass House Farms Gives Back to Local Santa Barbara Community Amid COVID-19 Pandemic
(Bar, California, Cannabis, China, Compliance, Consulting, Food, Growers, Packaging, Pesticide, United States, Vertically Integrated, Lights, Cultivation) Like many other states, California has deemed the cannabis industry an “essential” business that can remain operational during the state’s stay at home order aimed at slowing the spread of COVID-19. For Graham Farrar, the founder and CEO of Glass House Farms , a vertically integrated cannabis operator based in Santa Barbara, Calif., this means cannabis businesses must step up to help those in need during this difficult and uncertain time.“This is a time when we need everybody,” he told Cannabis Business Times. “If you’ve got a shovel, you need to get digging.”The way Farrar sees it, the industry gets to be the light in an otherwise bleak time, and this is a great opportunity for cannabis businesses to shatter old stereotypes and stigmas while giving back.“Sometimes you need help—and there have been a lot of people who have helped us along the way—and sometimes you get to be the helper,” he said. “We’re happy to return the favor to society and show how we can help out.”Photo courtesy...

90% of Medical Marijuana Is Too Strong for Chronic Pain Patients, Study Says
(Cannabis, Food, Legalization, Medical Marijuana, Oils, Products, Recreational, Regulations, Research, United States, Websites, THC) Researchers at the Wake Forest School of Medicine published a new study late last week about a pain medication that could be too strong for most patients. But instead of Oxycontin, fentanyl, or dozens of other opioids, the study’s authors claimed that medical cannabis was simply too powerful to properly treat pain. According to concurrent reports from Scitechdaily and New Atlas , the study, titled “Mapping cannabis potency in medical and recreational programs in the United States,” was published late last week in the journal PLOS ONE. By analyzing product potency listings from 8,505 batches of flower on 653 legal cannabis dispensary websites across the US, Dr. Alfonso Edgar Romero-Sandoval and his co-authors found statistical evidence for what cannabis aficionados have known for years: Pot is getting more potent. The researchers discovered that most cannabis flower sold in legal pot shops — both medical and adult-use — contained more than 10 percent THC, with a significant number of...

Cannabis Standards Rely on Transparency, Compliance and Collaboration

Moreover, quality remains the top criterion in selecting a cannabis product for purchase. How are companies setting the standards for quality and how are we researching consumers to understand their experiences with cannabis products accurately and ethically? This post explores the manufacturing and research standards to consider when conducting research studies with cannabis. Product Quality in Manufacturing At an HIV Community Cannabis Education event held in Toronto, a cannabis company proudly declared their company had not had a single product recall to date. Product recall happens when a product is defective, damaged or does not meet the customer’s expectations causing the product to be called off the shelf. This “zero recall” standard, the team said, was attributed to the fact that their cannabis product standards...

California: REINING IN CANNABIS TAX SCOFFLAWS
(Bar, California, Cannabis, Food, Grower, Growers, Products, Regulations, United States, Cultivation) Melinda Burns writes for “edhat” Santa Barbara (CA) Some cannabis operators in Santa Barbara County still don’t pay taxes, but there are signs that the county is closing in on them. Of 106 licensed cannabis growers and processors in county unincorporated areas, 15 failed to report their gross revenues during the most recent quarter, from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, according to a recent update for the county Board of Supervisors. That’s down from 22 tax scofflaws in the previous quarter. The county has put growers on notice that it will withdraw its “letter of authorization” for cannabis state business licenses if they fail to pay county taxes, said Assistant County Executive Officer Barney Melekian. “The word went out that we were paying attention to that,” he said, adding that one grower was forced to surrender his state license and shut down last month; two others promptly paid up, and a fourth has been summoned to a county administrative hearing. With 1,164 active state licenses for...

Czech Company CBDepot Says European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) green-lights “suitability check” for application to synthetically manufacture Cannabidiol (CBD) as a Novel Food ingredient
(Cannabis, CBD, Development, Food, Foods, Hemp, Manufacture, Supplements, Lights, Extracts) When we discover more about this we will let you know as quietly this is actually an important development in the European market. We imagine there’s a long haul before approval. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has green-lighted the “suitability check” of an application from Czech-based phytocannabinoids maker CBDepot for synthetically manufactured Cannabidiol (CBD) as a Novel Food ingredient, the company announced. CBDepot said it expects the EU Commission to declare its dossier valid and return it to EFSA for a risk assessment as soon as possible. If that assessment is positive, the compound’s use as an ingredient in food supplements still needs to be approved by EU Member States. One step in process The application was submitted last October. It’s approval is an important step in the process of clearing CBD for use as an ingredient in food supplements in European Union states, CBDepot has said. Cannabis Pharma (one of mother companies of CBDepot) has also submitted a...

The 2018 Farm Bill gives the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulatory authority over hemp cultivation at the federal level. In turn, states have the option to maintain primary regulatory authority over the crop cultivated within their borders by submitting a plan to the USDA. This federal and state interplay has resulted in many legislative and regulatory changes at the state level. Indeed, most states have introduced (and adopted) bills that would authorize the commercial production of hemp within their borders. A smaller but growing number of states also regulate the sale of products derived from hemp. In light of these legislative changes, we are presenting a 50-state series analyzing how each jurisdiction treats hemp-...
