Thanks to COVID-19, Lack of Protective Gear Could Lead to Cannabis Shortages
(Alcohol, Cannabis, Cleaning, EVIO, Facilities, Production, Products, Regulations, Testing, United States, Washington) The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has created a global shortage of facemasks, gloves, goggles, and other personal protective equipment (PPE) — items that are absolutely essential for medical professionals who are valiantly fighting the spread of this virus. As a result of the shortage, some healthcare workers in the US have been reusing potentially contaminated masks, or even creating their own improvised protective gear out of trash bags or bandanas. Personal protective equipment is also essential for many cannabis industry workers. Some elements of the pot production process, like flower trimming or pre-roll preparation, create airborne dust which can pose respiratory risks to employees. Technicians at cannabis testing labs also use protective gear to help ensure that their tests are conducted in a sterile environment. Canadian cannabis producers already donate excess PPE to medical facilities, and US pot businesses may soon be asked to do the same . Medical industry needs and panic...

Health Canada Asks Weed Industry for Help with COVID-19 Testing
(ACB, Alcohol, Aurora Cannabis Inc., Canada, Cannabis, CGC, Facilities, Greenhouses, HEXO, OGRMF, OrganiGram Inc, Production, Products, Testing) Canada's legal cannabis industry is stepping up to help fight the ongoing coronavirus pandemic by donating protective equipment and testing services to the medical community. Last week, Health Canada (HC) sent an email to licensed cannabis testing laboratories asking for assistance with COVID-19 testing. "Health Canada is working to identify lab capacity that might be available across the country in various sectors, including at licensed cannabis production sites, to assist with supporting COVID-19 testing," wrote Acting Director General Joanne Garrah, according to BNN Bloomberg . Canadian health officials are struggling to keep track of the spread of this virus, but gaps in testing are making it difficult to identify the total number of cases. Supply shortages and lack of properly-trained medical professionals are causing delays in the testing process, and many patients have been forced to wait weeks for their test results. These testing delays make it hard to keep an accurate count...

Doctor Sues the DEA Over a “Secret Law" Blocking Cannabis Research
(Arizona, Cannabis, Facilities, Grower, Growers, Growing, Law, Manufacture, Medical Marijuana, Mississippi, Research, Texas, United States, Cultivation) Attorneys filed suit last week against the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) over an alleged “secret law” that has stalled legitimate medical marijuana research in the US for the past three years. The lawsuit, dated March 25, came from Yetter Coleman, LLP , a Texas-based law firm that represents the Scottsdale Research Institute (SRI). Based in Arizona, SRI is led by Dr. Sue Sisley, a licensed physician who has been investigating medical marijuana as a treatment for cancer and PTSD. Last year, she filed suit against the DEA after the agency failed to review her application for a third-party marijuana growing license under the Obama-era Growers Program. According to the complaint, under the Trump administration, the Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) issued its own interpretation of the UN Single Convention treaty and the US Controlled Substances Act that required the DEA to draft new rules for the Growers Program. The proposed...

We’ll continue to update as regulators announce new policies. So far, during the COVID-19 pandemic, cannabis sales are through the roof as consumers stock up in anticipation of supply chain disruption. But, despite this upswing, cannabis companies are bracing for impact. As Cannabis Wire reported this week, a dilemma has hit the nascent industry: to close or not to close? Already, Canopy Growth chose to close nearly two dozen shops in Canada, and we’re tracking how other companies are reacting. But what happens in the case of forced closures? Cannabis regulators will have to weigh tough decisions in the coming days as businesses, from gyms to bowling alleys to bars, are asked to close as part of broader efforts to contain the spread of the virus. (While Canadian consumers can legally order cannabis online, should closures occur, changes are taking place north of the border. On...

DEA Takes Steps to Approve Cannabis Cultivation Applications, States Issue New Rules for Industry Amid COVID-19 Concerns: Week in Review
(ACB, Aurora Cannabis Inc., Canada, Cannabis, CGC, Development, Facilities, Jordan, Monitoring, Production, Stocks, Vertically Integrated, Dispensaries, Cultivation) DEA Takes Steps to Approve Cannabis Cultivation Applications, States Issue New Rules for Industry Amid COVID-19 Concerns: Week in Review The COVID-19 pandemic is forcing governments worldwide to take drastic measures to “flatten the curve” and reduce economic fallout, and Canada is no exception. The Great White North closed its border with the U.S. for all non-essential travel (goods are not included in that shutdown), shuttered schools, colleges and universities across the country, and provinces are taking steps to stop all non-essential businesses. The Canadian cannabis industry, for the most part, can operate as normally as it can. Dispensaries are conducting business with social distancing measures in place, deliveries can be made—although Canada Post will no longer deliver cannabis packages to purchasers’ homes , opting instead for postal office pickup to minimize delivery person exposure—and cultivation sites continue to operate. Hemp CBD Across Europe: Spain
(Cannabis, CBD, Cosmetics, Facilities, Food, Foods, Hemp, Law, Legalization, Marketing, Pet Foods, Production, Products, Regulations, Research, Spain, Strains, United States, Industrial Hemp, THC, Extracts) The enactment of the 2018 Farm Bill and the legalization of hemp and hemp derivatives, including cannabidiol (“CBD”), has led to a massive CBD craze in the United States. The highly coveted cannabinoid is infused with everything: bath bombs, dog treats and even workout clothes (yes, workout clothes!). According to a recent study by Cowen , the sales of these products are expected to reach $16 billion by 2025. Thanks to globalization, this sudden boom is not contained within the U.S. borders. Europe has also experienced a huge uptick in the sales of these products, which are expected to reach nearly $1.7 billion by 2023. In light of this global expansion and the desire of many of our clients to export their hemp and hemp-derived CBD (“Hemp CBD”) products to Europe, we are presenting a mini-series that briefly analyzes how certain European countries treat hemp and the sale and marketing of hemp-derived CBD. 2 Alternative Pot Stocks To Watch In The Cannabis Industry
(Cannabis, Facilities, IIPR, Innovative Industrial Properties, Investments, Investors, Leases, Stocks, Security) The coronavirus has been the cause for a large part of the pot stock volatility we have seen in the past few weeks. With this volatility, we have seen cannabis stocks shoot down in value by as much as 40% at the high end. While this has been the case, the past three days ending on March 26th, have resulted in extremely bullish sentiment in the cannabis market. During trading on March 26th, we saw some leading marijuana stocks shoot up by more than 50% during the day. As you can see, there are quite a lot of fluctuations going on around the world markets right now. [Read More] Are Marijuana Stocks On Their Way Back Up In The Market? But, several factors could help to push pot stocks in the right direction in the next few weeks. Panic Buying May Not Save the Weed Industry, After All
(California, Canada, Cannabis, China, Colorado, Drinks, Edibles, Facilities, Growing, Loans, Nevada, Production, Products, Recreational, United States, Washington) Image via The regulated marijuana industry recently experienced record-breaking sales while everyone stocked up weed, but the heady hoarding triggered by COVID-19 lockdowns may not be enough to save pot businesses from a potential economic recession. Already, sales figures have slumped back down to their typical year-over-year numbers in some weed-legal states. According to data from the weed analytics firm Headset, sales spiked from March 15-16, just as the US began to (rightfully) freak out over the coronavirus pandemic. Sales then rapidly declined from March 17-19, with a slight uptick in sales on March 20, a Friday. “The response might mark a natural decline after consumers stocked up before sheltering in place,” wrote Maggie Cowee at MJBizDaily regarding last week’s figures, “or it could be the result of economic pressures from the pandemic, which has resulted in the closure of restaurants, gyms, ski resorts, and scores of other businesses, as well as the loss of thousands of...

(Cannabis, Facilities, Growers, Growing, Organic, Production, Research, United States, Washington, Cultivation, Related Industries) Cannabis industry workers may face an increased risk of being exposed to respiratory hazards , according to a new study conducted by the University of Washington. The study, led by Christopher Simpson, PhD, professor of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences at the University of Washington, investigated two legal cannabis cultivation facilities in Washington State. One of these facilities is a 30,000-square-foot operation using traditional growing methods, and the other is a 20,000-square-foot grow-op using only organic methods. “Several prior studies indicate a significant potential for hazardous respiratory exposures in this industry, including mold, organic dust, and toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs),” the researchers wrote . “Our own recent work involving interviews with cannabis workers revealed that respiratory hazards were their major occupational health concern.” Simpson and his team recruited 31 of 45 employees working at the larger facility and 11 out of 20...

Youth Marijuana Treatment Admissions Fell After Legalization, Study Finds
(Alcohol, Cannabis, Colorado, Facilities, Law, Legalization, Medical Marijuana, Recreational, Research, United States, Washington, Dispensaries) Does legalizing marijuana for adults lead to a tidal wave of teens going to treatment? Not according to a new study out of Temple University, where researchers in fact found decreases in youth admission rates for problem cannabis use in two legal states. The findings, published this month in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence, run counter to speculation from legalization opponents, law enforcement and some public health experts, who have warned that relaxing cannabis laws could lead to an explosion in cannabis use disorders among children. If that’s happening, the study found, treatment admissions data so far show no sign of it. Examining data from publicly funded substance use treatment facilities, researchers from Temple’s geography and urban studies department, found that youth treatment admissions rates for cannabis use disorder fell sharply between 2008 and 2017, nationally as well as in Colorado and Washington State, which both passed legalization laws in 2012. “Our results...

(California, Cannabis, Cannabis and Hemp, Development, Education, Facilities, GSML, Hemp, Hemp Industries, Illinois, Law, Management, Massachusetts, Medical Marijuana, Michigan, New York, Recreational, Regulations, Science, Testing, United States, Washington, Dispensaries, Cultivation, Intellectual Property) As more and more states are shifting to a work-from-home environment and closing down non-essential businesses, we have seen a conflict in gubernatorial instructions on whether cannabis is a protected class of business that falls under “essential infrastructure” or “essential business.” Earlier this week, we compared the approach New York and California have taken to permitting businesses to continue to operate. The former, medical-only state received a carte blanche endorsement as an essential business in New York to provide (often immunocompromised) patients with necessary medication. California, on the other hand, remained silent in executive orders, and left it up to local mayoral representatives to make determinations as they saw fit and best for their respective communities. Massachusetts has taken a middle road, as Governor Charles D. Baker issued COVID-19 Order No. 13 on March 23, 2020 which becomes effective March 24, 2020 at noon. In Massachusetts, medical cannabis dispensaries have been deemed “essential services” amidst the coronavirus crisis in the same vein as pharmacies. “Knowing that in States of Emergencies pharmacies can produce hand sanitizer and that we have equivalent lab facilities and knowledgeable personnel, I put forth the recommendation and was thrilled to see enthusiasm from other members,” John Hillier, a CDA board member, the executive director of Central Ave Compassionate Care...

It’s taken a pandemic to turn talk into action and let’s hope that each of these companies is smart enough to incorporate this thinking into their businesses as they hopefully grow in the future. Congratulations to all these companies Ganjapreneur reports….. Cannabis companies around North America are stepping up to help however they can in the fight against the spreading coronavirus. Massachusetts’ Commonwealth Dispensary Association is partnering with the Massachusetts Health & Hospital Association to make hand sanitizer and other cannabis companies around the continent are donating personal protection equipment to hospitals amid the coronavirus pandemic. The CDA estimates that it can produce 5,000 gallons of hand sanitizer per week to donate to hospitals. The...

Clean Grow Still Failing? Check for Endophytic Mold
(Cannabis, Clothing, Facilities, Genetics, Grow Facilities, Growers, Growing, Hemp, Management, Production, Products, Research, Science, Testing, Cultivation) The journal Frontiers in Plant Science recently shared an important article from researchers at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, highlighting the “Pathogens and Molds Affecting Production and Quality of Cannabis Sativa.” As a chemist focused on the science of preventing and mitigating mold in greenhouse and indoor cannabis grow facilities, this piece was fascinating to me. Like many others, it details and explains prevalent mold like Penicillium, Cladosporium and Aspergillus – things I see in grows every day. But wait, there’s more fungi The research and resulting article also brought up another type of fungi – endophytic mold. Endophytic mold usually lives symbiotically with plants, or is at least beneficial for both plant and fungi. But not always. In the past, the industry has believed that damaging mold spores were found on the outside of the flower. When moved, that flower would release the spores and send them flying – often creating massive cross-contamination...

COVID-19 May Delay the Launch of Maine’s Adult-Use Cannabis Market
(Cannabis, Compliance, Facilities, Maine, Medical Marijuana, Testing, United States, Dispensaries) Maine’s Office of Marijuana Policy (OMP) released a memo March 24 indicating that while medical cannabis dispensaries are considered essential businesses under the state’s coronavirus policies, the launch of Maine’s adult-use cannabis market, which was slated for June, will likely be delayed due to the pandemic. The announcement is the latest in a series of delays for the adult-use market, which voters legalized in 2016.The OMP sent its memo to the state’s licensed medical cannabis businesses, as well as applicants seeking adult-use licenses, according to a Portland Press Herald report . The memo urges existing medical cannabis businesses to review their operating procedures and find areas to improve upon, including increased sanitary protocols and managing patient lines and interactions in compliance with social distancing guidelines. The memo also indicates that the OMP has heard concerns from dispensaries and caregivers about staff shortages as employees self-quarantine, and the...

Colorado Attorney Discusses ‘New Normal’ in Cannabis Industry
(Cannabis, Colorado, Compliance, Facilities, Law, Massachusetts, Media, New Jersey, New York, Regulations, Regulatory Compliance, Retail Stores, Social Media, United States, Websites, Dispensaries, Cultivation) Recent coronavirus response measures in Denver and Colorado have been keeping attorney Alyson Jaen’s attention lately as the industry works to maintain compliance. At 5 p.m. MDT on March 24, Denver’s stay-at-home order went into effect in response to the coronavirus. The previous day, Mayor Michael Hancock said adult-use businesses and liquor stores are nonessential, but reversed course a few hours later after an “outcry” and let the businesses remain open, according to The New York Times .Facing orders to stay in their homes and the possibility of not being able to purchase product when they do leave their homes, demand among adult-use customers increased 140% on March 23 before the mayor said adult-use businesses are essential, said Jaen, who is head of Denver-based Fortis Law Partners’ cannabis practice.“It was in a matter of hours [that] we had a huge pivot—'Yes, you're open,' 'No, you're not.’” she said. “That creates confusion and this idea of panic-buying.”Previously, on March...

It Takes The Village
(Argentina, Banking, Bar, Brazil, California, Cannabis, CBD, Facilities, Genetics, Grower, Growing, Medical Marijuana, Regulations, Spain, Strains, Testing, United States, Lights, Dispensaries, Extracts, Cultivation) When people talk about California’s legendary cannabis, they frequently mention growing ganja grown deep in the Emerald Triangle and weed sparked up on the bustling streets of Los Angeles and San Francisco. But there’s another region in the Golden State that is now demanding attention. Since California’s adult-use cannabis market came online in 2018, Sacramento has exploded onto the scene as a hub of top-shelf indoor cultivation. Few people in town — perhaps only Gov. Gavin Newsom — have helped push Sacramento to the top of the cannabis stratosphere more than its cultivators, who are growing some of the best cannabis in the world. But in recent years, one local cultivator has pushed the envelope so far that everyone else in town (and across the state) is now growing the genetics he’s helped curate and breed. As half of Symbiotic Genetics , The Village finds himself among a small group of cultivators giving Sacramento’s cannabis a global reach. At one point, there was so much of his...

Maine Medical Marijuana Businesses Deemed “Essential” In Light of Pandemic
(Cannabis, Facilities, Law, Maine, Manufacturing, Medical Marijuana, Processing, Products, Staffing, Testing, United States, Licensee, Dispensaries, Cultivation) Maine’s Office of Marijuana Policy (OMP) issued a memorandum today explaining that medical marijuana businesses are deemed “essential” and may continue operating despite the spread of COVID-19. However, OMP urges medical marijuana businesses to take all necessary precautions to ensure proper sanitization and social distancing in their facilities. The memo, which can be found here , provides a baseline for increasing precautionary measures and also provides links to other state and federal guidance documents and directives for review. Other key points from OMP’s memo include the following: Medical marijuana dispensaries and caregivers are classified as “other medical facilities” under the Governor’s executive order and are allowed to stay open. Governor Mills urged “non-essential” public-facing businesses to close but medical marijuana businesses are exempt from this guidance. OMP will continue inspections of medical marijuana facilities and stores for the foreseeable future, while...

But the shutdowns have prompted perhaps an unexpected question amid the coronavirus chaos: Are medical marijuana operations considered “essential” in this new public arena? For many areas across the U.S., the answer is a resounding “yes.”Over in San Francisco, though, that wasn’t always the case. All seven counties in the Bay Area of California implemented a shelter-in-place order March 16. The order, which is in place until at least April 7, included a list of essential services that could remain open but left room for interpretation regarding other businesses, including...

CBD Company Pivots to Hand Sanitizer
(Alcohol, Cannabis, CBD, Cleaning, Extraction, Facilities, Hawaii, Manufacturing, Montana, Oils, Production, Products, Topicals, United States) Sam Belanger runs a CBD company, and is well aware that CBD is no longer the hottest product on the market. Amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, hand sanitizer might hold that title and like nearly everyone else on earth, Belanger couldn’t find any. Belanger is the COO and co-founder of Green Ridge Biosolutions, a CBD company based in Ronan, Montana. Since opening for business, the company, which makes CBD oils, topicals, and healthcare products, found that it ran through a fair bit of alcohol-based germ-killer during normal operations — and since the coronavirus pandemic widened, there was simply no more to be found on the commercial market. So after a brief conversation with the company chemist, Green Ridge decided to start making its own, and is now supplying hand sanitizer to customers in multiple states as well as donating the badly needed stuff to local healthcare workers and first responders, the Missoulian reported . The company’s been manufacturing and distributing its very...

OxiClean Spokesman Anthony Sullivan Turns TV Spotlight on Hemp
(Cannabis, CBD, Exploring, Facilities, Grower, Growing, Hemp, Investment, Manufacturing, Organic, Processing, Production, Products, Research, Topicals, United States, Vermont, Pharmaceuticals) What does it take to become a farmer? Those who are successful often exhibit grit, hard work and perseverance in the face of adversity. For Anthony Sullivan, a television pitchman, becoming a farmer has also included a huge investment, a full TV production crew and an inspiration worth fighting for.Sullivan, best known as the spokesman for Oxiclean, has made his name in television, both on-screen and off with his production company, Sullivan Productions. It’s only right, then, that his process of starting a hemp farm from scratch be documented in its entirety for a TV series set to premiere this summer.Last year, Sullivan and his partner, Dave Christian, purchased a 116-acre farm among the rolling hills of Plainfield, Vt., that they named MONTKUSH to begin growing organic hemp for cannabidiol (CBD). Though neither one of them had any farming experience, Sullivan was inspired by his 9-year-old daughter, Devon, to begin making CBD.Devon was born with a genetic disorder so rare it doesn’...

Are You Ready for a Cannabis Shortage?
(ACB, Alcohol, Batteries, Canada, Cannabis, CGC, China, Edibles, Events, Facilities, Growers, Growing, Hemp, HEXO, Illinois, Investors, Legalization, Manufacturing, United States, Cultivation, Security) The COVID-19 pandemic could lead to cannabis shortage just when we need it most. Covid 19 affects everyone, but especially the vulnerable, such as those with already compromised immune systems. Many medicinal cannabis patients find themselves in this group, something that serves to underline the importance of preparedness for any supply shortages. Here are some tips to ensure you are ready to weather a potential cannabis shortage. Do You Already Have Your Cannabis Gear? Although the coronavirus doesn’t directly impact the cannabis industry, it does affect the all-important supply chain underpinning the global market that cannabis has become. As more people isolate themselves from normal life, cannabis consumption will likely increase. But supply-chain issues in China, where much of the manufacturing takes place, may well prove to be the biggest threat to supplies. Much of this relates to vape-related hardware, ninety to ninety-five percent of which originate in China but can also mean...

Governor’s Office Designates Cannabis an Essential Business
(California, Cannabis, Clothing, Distribution, Facilities, Food, Law, Manufacturing, Production, Products, Regulations, United States, Licensee, Cultivation) On Thursday, March 19, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom issued a stay at home order to protect the health and well-being of all Californians and to establish a consistent approach across the state to slow the spread of COVID-19. This order went into effect on Thursday, March 19, 2020, and is in place until further notice. The order identifies certain services as essential, including food, prescriptions, and healthcare. These services can continue despite the stay at home order. Because cannabis is an essential medicine for many residents, the Governor clarified his order on March 22, 2020, by declaring that cannabis retailers are an essential business and workers supporting cannabis retail and dietary supplement retail are an essential worker force.
