Cannabis Consumer Behavior Alters With Covid-19 Quarantine: Edibles & Drinks Surge
(Alcohol, Beverage, Cannabis, Drinks, Edibles, Events, Marketing, Packaging, Products, Topicals, United States) So many things have been turned upside down with this pandemic, and saying we live in interesting times would be an understatement. Industries and businesses are being demolished and altered in ways unheard of just a month ago, and a rare few are actually booming. For the cannabis industry, one of the biggest changes leading to a boom is that as a whole cannabis is now being considered an “essential” part of life nationwide. The level of legitimacy this brings to the industry would have normally taken another decade. Delivery services and curb side pick-up have been implemented across the country also erasing years of necessary effort overnight. But overall, the complete change in cannabis consumer behavior has been one of the most interesting developments to witness for many of us. As reported by Vice , politics and current events are major sources of anxiety for many in the United States and this leads to an increase of unhealthy behaviors like drinking alcohol, smoking, or eating...

What Is a "K-Hole" and Why Does Ketamine Cause This Experience?
(Alcohol, Science) Ketamine, known on the streets as “Special K” or simply “K,” is a drug recognized by the US government and the World Health Organization as an essential medicine. Ketamine has been used in emergency rooms across the US for years for minor surgeries, particularly in children. It's most popularly known as a "horse tranquilizer" due to its use in veternary medicine, as well. As this anesthetic gains wider acceptance in Western healthcare as a treatment for depression and post-traumatic stress , patients should understand what its effects are. And one of the drug’s most (in)famous effects is the “K-hole.” What, exactly, is a K-hole? What causes it? And why do some people love the experience while others fear it almost as much as death itself? Read on to find out more about this mysterious and surreal sensation induced by ketamine. What Is a K-Hole? The K-hole is essentially a state of paralysis where the ketamine consumer becomes suspended in a semi-conscious, tranquilized state...

Canada: medical cannabis is essential • Canopy’s board transformation • Australia’s cannabis access review • & more…
(Alcohol, Australia, Canada, Cannabis, CGC, Medical Marijuana, Processing, Products, Regulations) The Cannabis Wire Daily newsletter is sent to C-Wire Plus subscribers every weekday morning at 7 a.m. Excerpts are published here later in the day. Don’t miss the full picture. Subscribe now . Canopy Growth’s board transformation is complete. And then there were none. And by none we mean none of the pre-Constellation board members at Canopy Growth. Ever since the alcohol giant invested $4 billion into the Canadian cannabis company, one of the largest in the world, one-by-one the original Canopy executives and board members have been replaced. The one that made the headlines was the ouster last year of Canopy co-founder and CEO Bruce Linton. He was subsequently replaced by David Klein, who stepped in, unsurprisingly, from Constellation. Yesterday, Canopy announced that John Bell and Peter Stringham, the last two remaining pre-Constellation board members, would “retire” from the board. They will be replaced by Terry Yanofsky, a former SVP at Sephora Canada, and David Lazzarato, a former...

Cannabis Culture From Rastafarian to Hash in Afghanistan
(Afghanistan, Alcohol, Beverage, Cannabis, Education, France, Genetics, Growing, India, Italy, Jamaica, Legalization, Netherlands, Production, Recreational, Spain, Recreational Cannabis, Funding) These cultural attitudes toward cannabis are shaped by historical experiences. A global revolution in attitudes towards the cannabis plant is well and truly underway. In the west, much of the work involves undoing the damage done by the ‘war on drugs’. Other countries, however, already have laid back attitudes towards the plant. From Indian to Rastafarian culture, there’s no evidence that tolerance or acceptance of cannabis ever led to a heroin epidemic, or a generation of unemployed bums . The Netherlands: Historical Liberal Attitudes Adults don’t like to be told what to do. And it was back in the 1970s when the Dutch had the good sense to stop prosecuting cannabis users. The Dutch are a tolerant bunch when it comes to cannabis use, and many of them can take it or leave it. A surprisingly percentage of the population is never bother with it. In fact, the world-famous Amsterdam coffee-shops are frequented by substantially more tourists than locals. According to the United Nations Drug...

Who Lobbied on Cannabis in New York During the Latest Legalization Push?

New York has recorded by far the highest numbers of positive tests and deaths in the country. But before the spread of coronavirus, New York was on track to legalize, and perhaps lead the entire northeast in a coordinated approach with neighboring states like Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Cuomo, who tried to legalize through the budget in 2019, too, said this January when he announced his legislative priorities during his budget address that he believes the budget process is “the opportunity, frankly, to make some tough decisions and work through tough issues that without the budget can often languish.” In the early months of 2020, a flurry of entities filed disclosures that indicated they were lobbying on cannabis issues. Some focused on lawmakers,...

A History of All the Different Ways People Have Taken LSD
(Alcohol, California, Candy, Products, Recreational, United States) LSD, a psychedelic drug known for its mind-blowing visual displays and life-altering insights, is typically consumed through the mouth. But, due to LSD being an incredibly tiny molecule, it can enter the human body through a variety of routes, not just orally. Ever since LSD — otherwise known as “acid” — first entered popular culture, people have tried numerous ways of consuming it. Below, you’ll find pretty much all of them with historical examples showing that, yes, these methods did, in fact, work. However, since LSD is a Schedule I drug in the US, know that trying any of these methods could land you in prison. There are also some minor health risks to consider. Basically, MERRY JANE isn’t responsible if you decide to trip acid after reading this. We’re just providing the information for educational — and entertainment — purposes. Now let’s dive into the psychedelic abyss of dosing techniques. Through the Skin Since the LSD molecule is so tiny, it can absorb directly through the...

Cannabis Municipal Bonds Could Be The Future
(Alcohol, Arizona, Banking, Cannabis, Colorado, Connecticut, Consulting, Development, Education, Exploring, Growing, Investments, Investors, Iowa, Legalization, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, Products, Regulations, Tobacco, United States, Vermont) MPG Consulting has recently authored a report looking at the potential of Cannabis Municipal Bonds (CMB). Adam Orens, Founder of MPG and Sal Barnes, Managing Director, MPG have conducted a theoretical analysis using Colorado showing how the state can translate its cannabis revenue into a short-term bond amount of $166 million and long-term bond issued in the amount of $591 million resulting in $123 million and $438 million available for educational initiatives and infrastructure, respectively. States and municipalities already use revenue bonds as a way to pay for large projects. The investors of such bonds feel that the risk for these investments is lower since there is a captive source of revenue to pay the interest. The report gives Iowa as an example. That state allocates $55 million in gaming taxes every year to pay the debt on revenue bonds that were issued in 2009 and 2010. That money raised selling these bonds was then used for community revitalization, flood mitigation, and...

Cannabis Delivery Proves Essential During COVID-19 Quarantine
(Alcohol, California, Cannabis, Development, Exploring, Legalization, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Recreational, United States, Licensee, Security) There are so many disturbing and upsetting developments that have occurred over the last month concerning the global pandemic, Coronavirus, that it is hard to count. But one specific development has been pretty interesting in regard to cannabis legalization. State after sate has determined cannabis to be an “essential” part of life. This is quite the validation the industry has been seeking since prohibition. And with this “essential” new status has come a surge in sales across the board as users stock pile the items they feel they need the most to get through these trying times. Although sales are surging for the industry overall, one group of license holders have become more essential than others: delivery services. Considering the nature of a viral pandemic and the need to stay as far away from other human beings as possible, it makes sense that having your groceries, alcohol, toilet paper and weed delivered would feel the safest. States like Louisiana, Pennsylvania and NJ, among...

Can I Give CBD to my Dog?
(Alcohol, Cannabis, CBD, CBN, Edibles, Food, Growers, Hemp, Hemp Products, Italy, Law, Nutraceuticals, Oils, Pets, Products, Research, Seed Oil, THC, Cultivation) Can I give CBD to my dog? The answer is yes, but proceed with caution. The limited scientific evidence available on CBD for other animals suggests that Cannabidiol may be beneficial for dogs in treating symptoms of anxiety or pain. But, many dog owners have questions around which cannabinoids and terpenes to avoid, proper dosing, and methods of administration. Here’s what every pet owner should consider about research into, “Can I give CBD to my Dog?” 1) THC is Dangerous for Dogs so no Sharing Bud Dogs getting their paws on cannabis is a much more common occurrence than many might think. When owners carelessly leave their stash lying around, dogs are inclined to stick their nose in and chew it down. As a result, many owners unintentionally give their pets toxic doses of THC. People frequently wonder how there can even be THC in raw bud. This is due to the nature of degradation of cannabis over time. At all points in time, exposure to elements, like heat and light, will cause THCa to...

Thanks to COVID-19, Lack of Protective Gear Could Lead to Cannabis Shortages
(Alcohol, Cannabis, Cleaning, EVIO, Facilities, Production, Products, Regulations, Testing, United States, Washington) The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has created a global shortage of facemasks, gloves, goggles, and other personal protective equipment (PPE) — items that are absolutely essential for medical professionals who are valiantly fighting the spread of this virus. As a result of the shortage, some healthcare workers in the US have been reusing potentially contaminated masks, or even creating their own improvised protective gear out of trash bags or bandanas. Personal protective equipment is also essential for many cannabis industry workers. Some elements of the pot production process, like flower trimming or pre-roll preparation, create airborne dust which can pose respiratory risks to employees. Technicians at cannabis testing labs also use protective gear to help ensure that their tests are conducted in a sterile environment. Canadian cannabis producers already donate excess PPE to medical facilities, and US pot businesses may soon be asked to do the same . Medical industry needs and panic...

Health Canada Asks Weed Industry for Help with COVID-19 Testing
(ACB, Alcohol, Aurora Cannabis Inc., Canada, Cannabis, CGC, Facilities, Greenhouses, HEXO, OGRMF, OrganiGram Inc, Production, Products, Testing) Canada's legal cannabis industry is stepping up to help fight the ongoing coronavirus pandemic by donating protective equipment and testing services to the medical community. Last week, Health Canada (HC) sent an email to licensed cannabis testing laboratories asking for assistance with COVID-19 testing. "Health Canada is working to identify lab capacity that might be available across the country in various sectors, including at licensed cannabis production sites, to assist with supporting COVID-19 testing," wrote Acting Director General Joanne Garrah, according to BNN Bloomberg . Canadian health officials are struggling to keep track of the spread of this virus, but gaps in testing are making it difficult to identify the total number of cases. Supply shortages and lack of properly-trained medical professionals are causing delays in the testing process, and many patients have been forced to wait weeks for their test results. These testing delays make it hard to keep an accurate count...

Fly High in the World’s First Hemp Airplane
(Alcohol, Cannabis, Hemp, Hemp, Inc., New York, Organic, Production, Research, United States, THC, Cultivation) The sky is the limit for the benefits of the hemp plant. The hemp airplane might be poised to change a problematic industry. While it’s a necessity for much of the population and the integrity of global economies, the aviation industry is one of the biggest polluters out there. Even as aircraft become more fuel-efficient, the demand continues to outstrip the benefits. According to a report from the International Council on Clean Transportation (2018), the demand for air travel is increasing 1.5 times faster than U.N. estimates. In an industry that’s responsible for 2.4 percent of the world’s emissions, this growth is a significant contributor to climate change. But, as big a polluter as air travel may be, it isn’t going anywhere. These alarming stats merely push many entrepreneurially-minded individuals to look for ever-more efficient alternatives in how the aviation industry moves forward. For one Canadian based company, the next evolution in aviation is the hemp airplane. Taking...

Activists Protest Massachusetts' Decision to Close Adult-Use Cannabis Stores
(Alcohol, Cannabis, Growing, Massachusetts, Medical Marijuana, Netherlands, Recreational, United States, Dispensaries) The US is deep in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic , and a growing number of states have issued “shelter-in-place” orders, requiring all non-essential businesses to close. Most states have designated both adult-use and medical marijuana as essential services during the quarantine, but Massachusetts has taken a different stance on the matter. On Monday, Governor Charlie Baker announced that all non-essential businesses in the state would be forced to close until April 7 in order to minimize the spread of the virus. Baker declared that medical marijuana dispensaries and liquor stores are considered essential services, and will therefore remain open, but recreational weed businesses are considered non-essential. “The main reason is because Massachusetts is one of the big states with [a large] geographic area that has recreational marijuana, and there's a ton of traffic coming from that is coming from other states," said the governor, according to the Boston Business Journal . "We...

Most Americans Want Medical Cannabis Dispensaries to Stay Open During Lockdown
(Alcohol, Arizona, California, Cannabis, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Legalization, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Medical Marijuana, Mexico, Michigan, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, United States, Washington, Dispensaries) Most Americans believe that states should not restrict access to legal medical cannabis during “shelter-in-place” measures, according to a new poll . The poll , conducted by YouGov earlier this week, asked nearly 5,400 Americans whether medical marijuana dispensaries should be considered “essential services” or not. Slightly over half (53 percent) of all respondents agreed that access to medical marijuana was essential, and only 26 percent said that dispensaries should not be considered essential. A further 21 percent were undecided on the matter. As is often the case with cannabis-related polls , younger and more liberal respondents were more likely to be in favor of keeping dispensaries open. Between 54 and 59 percent of respondents between the ages of 18 and 54 agreed that medical marijuana is an essential service, but only 47 percent of those over 55 felt the same way. Democrats were also more likely (62 percent) to agree than independents (52 percent) or Republicans (43 percent...

Are Weed Hangovers Real, and How Can You Cure the Side Effects?
(Alcohol, Cannabis, Edibles, Research) Talk to enough stoners, and one of them may eventually argue that weed beats alcohol on the merits of hangovers — or lack thereof — alone. While it’s true that the effects of alcohol consumption can produce some truly unwelcome, occasionally serious consequences, cannabis cannot wholly claim to be devoid of hangovers. At least, that’s what some people think. Sometimes referred to as a “hippie hangover,” the reported symptoms associated with a cannabis-induced hangover range from mental fogginess and physical sluggishness, to a nagging headache. Though arguably minor when compared with the possible outcomes of drinking, there are consumers who swear that weed hangovers are real, as well as those that dismiss it as poppycock. So, what’s the truth of the matter? Let’s explore. Are “Hippie Hangovers” For Real? Part of the problem with determining whether “hippie hangovers” have scientific merit or are just “in our heads” is the absence of evidence for either claim. As of now, there are...

Quarantine Wellness: 5 Tips for Staying Sane and Grounded During Lockdown
(Alcohol, Cannabis, Edibles, Food, Foods, Media, Social Media, Training) We’re living through one of the most transformative moments in human history. The COVID-19 virus spread around the world in less than six months, leaving thousands dead and hundreds of thousands ill in its wake. Not only is this disease showing the cracks in the American system, but it’s also acting as a backlight to the fractures in the global system. It’s hard not to feel stressed, anxious, confused, and even sick now that we are facing a global sickness and being forced into isolation. It’s as if we’ve been put in a collective timeout. Despite the uncertainty, everything is actually going to be OK at the end of this. We just have to hone in on skills that will help us stay grounded and sane through this vexing time. Before diving in, here’s a bit about who I am. My name is Dee Dussault, and I pioneered Ganja Yoga . We are a global community of modern-day cannabis yogis who tap into the ancient practice of blending cannabis and yoga. This practice isn’t the average series of asanas...

Youth Marijuana Treatment Admissions Fell After Legalization, Study Finds
(Alcohol, Cannabis, Colorado, Facilities, Law, Legalization, Medical Marijuana, Recreational, Research, United States, Washington, Dispensaries) Does legalizing marijuana for adults lead to a tidal wave of teens going to treatment? Not according to a new study out of Temple University, where researchers in fact found decreases in youth admission rates for problem cannabis use in two legal states. The findings, published this month in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence, run counter to speculation from legalization opponents, law enforcement and some public health experts, who have warned that relaxing cannabis laws could lead to an explosion in cannabis use disorders among children. If that’s happening, the study found, treatment admissions data so far show no sign of it. Examining data from publicly funded substance use treatment facilities, researchers from Temple’s geography and urban studies department, found that youth treatment admissions rates for cannabis use disorder fell sharply between 2008 and 2017, nationally as well as in Colorado and Washington State, which both passed legalization laws in 2012. “Our results...
