DEA Takes Steps to Approve Cannabis Cultivation Applications, States Issue New Rules for Industry Amid COVID-19 Concerns: Week in Review
(ACB, Aurora Cannabis Inc., Canada, Cannabis, CGC, Development, Facilities, Jordan, Monitoring, Production, Stocks, Vertically Integrated, Dispensaries, Cultivation) DEA Takes Steps to Approve Cannabis Cultivation Applications, States Issue New Rules for Industry Amid COVID-19 Concerns: Week in Review The COVID-19 pandemic is forcing governments worldwide to take drastic measures to “flatten the curve” and reduce economic fallout, and Canada is no exception. The Great White North closed its border with the U.S. for all non-essential travel (goods are not included in that shutdown), shuttered schools, colleges and universities across the country, and provinces are taking steps to stop all non-essential businesses. The Canadian cannabis industry, for the most part, can operate as normally as it can. Dispensaries are conducting business with social distancing measures in place, deliveries can be made—although Canada Post will no longer deliver cannabis packages to purchasers’ homes , opting instead for postal office pickup to minimize delivery person exposure—and cultivation sites continue to operate. UK expedites cannabis imports • Canopy’s bad day • A global cannabis standard? • & more…
(Cannabis, CBD, CGC, Colorado, Facilities, Jordan, Kentucky, Legalization, Medical Marijuana, Mexico, New Mexico, Production, Products, Quality Control, Recreational, Research, Topicals, United States, Recreational Cannabis, Security) The Cannabis Wire Daily newsletter is sent to C-Wire Plus subscribers every weekday morning at 7 a.m. Excerpts are published here later in the day. Don’t miss the full picture. Subscribe now . UK changes import requirements for cannabis medicines. In recent months, UK officials have made a number of changes to expand access to cannabis-based medicines, from agreeing to cover the costs of some medicines to supporting research. Now, the government is expediting the import process. Specifically, licensed entities will be able to “import larger quantities of cannabis-based products” and “hold supplies for future use by patients with prescriptions.” Canopy’s bad day. It was only a matter of time before the cutbacks across the cannabis industry hit the world’s largest cannabis company. Canopy Growth announced this week it would close two greenhouse facilities in British Columbia, more than 3 million square feet licensed for cannabis production. This also represents the cutting of ~500 jobs...

This Marijuana Stock Promised Canna-Infused Drinks, But Where Are They?
(Beverage, Canada, Cannabis, CBD, CGC, Drinks, Edibles, Events, Investment, Investments, Investors, Jordan, Legalization, Production, Products, Stocks, Tweed Marijuana Inc, TWMJF, THC, Extracts) Last year, cannabis-infused drinks were all the hype amongst the most prominent marijuana stocks . But, since that time, we have not seen many of these products hit the market. One of the largest events that occurred in this area was when Canopy Growth ( CGC Stock Report ) received a multi-billion infusion of capital from Constellation Brands ( STZ Stock Report ). The goal was to begin producing and building out an entire ecosystem of cannabis-infused drinks. After receiving all of this money, Canopy simply went on to acquire a series of businesses, but no drinks were to be found. Currently, the studies are showing that the public would like to see these beverages hit the market. The potential for both CBD and THC infused drinks is extremely high. Of course, there are a few niche companies that are working on producing these beverages, but big-name pot stocks have been slow to the plate. The Canadian Cannabis Beverage Market Canada was supposed to be the Mecca for cannabis-infused...

Michigan Will Phase Out Caregiver-Sourced Cannabis
(Cannabis, Growers, Jordan, Medical Marijuana, Michigan, Products, United States, Dispensaries, Cultivation) Michigan’s Marijuana Regulatory Agency announced a plan to phase out caregiver-sourced cannabis in its medical cannabis dispensaries. Effective immediately, licensed cannabis businesses may no longer purchase cannabis concentrates, cartridges or other infused products from caregivers in the state. Cannabis flower is a different story—for now. The final day for caregiver-sourced cannabis flower transfers will be Sept. 30. Between now and then, the state will impose certain regulatory rules on how to track cannabis flower inventory purchased from caregivers. Along the way, growers and processors will be mandated to decrease the amount of cannabis flower they purchase from those sources.“The flower is what there was a huge shortage of, and the caregivers kind of filled that gap so to speak,” Jordan Ezell, owner of Interlochen Alternative Health, told Michigan’s 9 & 10 News. The US Now Has Its First CBD-Infused Fast Food Joint, Called Illegal Burger
(Cannabis, CBD, Colorado, Drinks, Edibles, Florida, Food, Foods, GW Pharmaceuticals plc, Jordan, Law, Products, Texas, United States) As American consumers bicker over plant-based faux-meat items appearing on fast food menus, one Colorado-based company has figured out a way to legally offer another plant-derived product, CBD, alongside its burgers and fries. Illegal Burger , which doesn’t yet directly infuse CBD into its food due to federal restrictions outlawing CBD-infused edibles, has five locations in Colorado and is opening a sixth in Texas. The company also owns Illegal Pizza in Florida. Technically, under Colorado law, CBD can be added to food. However, Illegal Burger’s owners are playing it safe by not directly infusing the cannabis compound into their food. Instead, they offer packets of emulsified CBD powders — made through another company that they own, called Illegal Brands — so customers can add it to their burgers, fries, sauces, or drinks. Illegal Burger locations also sell flavored-water mixes that contain CBD. The only CBD-infused product the franchise sells is unflavored bottled water, which is not...

School Suspends Student for 10 Days for Smelling Like Marijuana
(Arizona, Cannabis, Jordan, United States) High school student Jordan Evans claims to be wrongly accused of smelling like marijuana while at school and getting suspended for it – and he may get expelled. “I feel like my principal and teacher could’ve handled it way better because they could’ve asked any other students,” Evans told Dayton 24/7 Now . “They could’ve smelled others, but they picked me. The principal made me take everything out of my pockets and made me take off my shoes as well as pull up my sweatpants and she didn’t find anything at all. Peddler’s Licenses & Co-Ops: Chicago Brainstorms Ways to Make Cannabis More Equitable
(Apps, Cannabis, Exploring, Illinois, Investment, Jordan, Law, Media, Medical Marijuana, Products, United States, Dispensaries, Cultivation) Cannabis became legal in Illinois on New Year’s Day, and now Chicago’s administration and community leaders are brainstorming ways to implement a model for the industry that addresses the social harms of prohibition. Chicago is one of the cities that has been most impacted by the drug war dystopia, so it is fitting that some unorthodox and cutting-edge ideas are being broached in the Windy City. The current unique cannabis ideas the city is considering include a city-owned cultivation co-op which residents could join and earn a stake in and a “peddler’s license” for individuals to sell cannabis themselves. “Ensuring this emerging industry brings unprecedented economic and social benefits to our communities has been at the heart of our efforts since day one,” Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot told the Chicago Sun-Times . With some Illinois municipalities already experimenting with alternative models like cannabis-tax funded “reparations,” Chicago is still in the phase of weighing proposals...

Ohio High School Student Expelled for Smelling Like Pot, Despite Clean Drug Test
(Cannabis, Drug Tests, Jordan, Ohio, United States, THC) A student at Northmont High School in Clayton, Ohio was expelled last week after he was accused of smelling like cannabis in class. Despite the claim and immediate punishment, the student was never found with pot in his possession, and even submitted to multiple drug tests, which all came back clean. The ordeal began last Wednesday, when a teacher said that he smelled weed during a first period class. At that point, Jordan Evans, a black student, was singled out and sent to the principal's office, where he was immediately searched. "The principal made me take everything out of my pockets and made me take off my shoes, as well as pull up my sweatpants. She didn't find anything at all. I didn't have anything at all," Evans told Dayton24/7Now . Even without any evidence to support the teacher’s claim, the principal punished Evans to 10 days of at-home suspension, and later expelled the student. Chicago Activists Want “Peddler’s Licenses” to Legally Sell Weed on the Streets
(California, Cannabis, Colorado, Consulting, Deals, Food, Illinois, Jordan, Legalization, Loans, Products, United States, Cultivation, Security) A group of Chicago activists are asking the state of Illinois to create a new cannabis license that will allow aspiring entrepreneurs to sell weed in public places. Currently, all state-approved cannabis products can only be sold from a licensed dispensary or retail store. The activists, led by violence interrupter Tio “Mr. Ceasefire” Hardiman, proposed the so-called “peddler’s license” as a way to guarantee social equity in a new industry already dominated by wealthy Caucasians. They also believe the license will reduce gun violence in the Windy City, which is often triggered by drug deals gone bad and hustlers encroaching on others’ turf. “This way you can take the criminal element out of [selling marijuana] and allow these young guys to make some legal money,” Hardiman said at a press conference held just outside of a Near West Side cannabis store on Wednesday. “And then you can help reduce unemployment in the African-American community.” Crime likely won’t vanish just because...

Report: Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City -“Is the Colorado Marijuana Industry Showing Signs of Maturation?”
(Acquisition, Alcohol, Banking, California, Cannabis, CBD, Colorado, Development, District of Columbia, Education, Facilities, Growers, Growing, Hemp, Investment, Jordan, Kansas, Kentucky, Law, Legalization, Manufacturing, Medical Marijuana, Mexico, Mountain High Acquisitions Corp., New Mexico, Production, Products, Recreational, Regulations, Research, Texas, United States, Washington, XXII, Industrial Hemp, THC, Dispensaries, Cultivation, Funding, Security) Is the Colorado Marijuana Industry Showing Signs of Maturation? Alison Felix , Senior Policy Advisor, Sam Chapman , Associate Economist, and Jordan Bass, Research Associate DECEMBER 31, 2019 | This issue of the Rocky Mountain Economist provides an update on the economic impacts of the marijuana industry in Colorado and evaluates signs of maturation within this industry nearly six years after the first recreational marijuana storefronts opened. Colorado, which opened recreational stores in January 2014, has the longest-running legalized marijuana market in the United States. Since stores opened, Colorado’s marijuana sector has exhibited rapid growth of firms, total sales, tax revenues and employees. However, the strong growth of marijuana sales and new business entrants began to slow in 2017 and 2018, suggesting the industry may be moving into a more mature stage of development. However, because sales are up sharply this year, it may be too soon to declare the marijuana sector’s growth...

California Regulated Cannabis: Reboot in 2020!!
(California, Cannabis, Compliance, Distribution, Financing, Food, Jordan, Law, Legalization, Medical Marijuana, Regulations, Regulatory Compliance, United States, Washington) If you wish to re-publish this story please do so with following accreditation AUTHOR: aBIZinaBOX Inc. CPAs – Jordan S. Zoot, CPA PUBLISHER: CANNABIS LAW REPORT The merriment of the holiday season has not overtaken California’s cannabis industry as 2019 comes to a close. The Legislature, Governor Newsom’s office, cannabis regulatory agencies (principally BCC, CalCannabis, CDPH, and CDTFA), law enforcement agencies, and a multitude of other groups and individuals interested in this industry have been confronted with the reality of a disaster. To paraphrase my father’s recurring admonition when something I attempted went wrong, “It is your own damn fault because you did not think it through.” The LA Times published an article on December 24th that begins, “Two years after California began licensing pot shops, the industry remains so outmatched by the black market that a state panel recently joined some legalization supporters in calling for significant changes — perhaps turning again to...

Crapo. Grinch Or Politician ?
(Alcohol, Banking, Cannabis, Development, Jordan, Law, Legalization, Tobacco, United States, Washington, THC) If you wish to re-publish this story please do so with following accreditation AUTHOR: aBIZinaBOX Inc. CPAs – Jordan S. Zoot, CPA PUBLISHER: CANNABIS LAW REPORT We are busy with a cross-country relocation, but we nevertheless felt compelled to make a quick comment in response to NORML’s knee-jerk December 23, 2019, post. Tell Senator Crapo that a 2% THC cap is unacceptable and that banking reform can’t wait. . Senator Crapo is not a grinch. Senator Crapo is one of 536 politicians, or some comparable number of members of this particular species who reside in Washington, D.C. and who spend substantially all of their time pandering for votes. With respect to the SAFE Act, Senator Crapo is just developing a foundation for his political positioning. The devil will always be found in the details of legislation such as the SAFE Act. Who knows where legislation in the United States such as the SAFE Act will go in view of the intense partisanship in Washington, D.C.? At this time Congress is...

Visit trichomeinstitute.com/bravenewweed and use promote code Brave for 10% off their online "Interpeneing" course.Like many in his generation, Jordan Klepper was indifferent to weed, both the plant and the politics. He had tried it when he was a student at Kalamazoo College but it made him paranoid so he moved on to bourbon and rye and didn’t think much about it other than it was legal in California and already felt legal in New York where he lives. But when one of his producers told him that the citizens of Compton, CA -- the city that gave the world the word “chronic” rejected two ballot initiatives allowing legal sales (and the jobs and tax revenue that come with it), he got curious and went to Compton to explore.His...
