Glass House Farms Gives Back to Local Santa Barbara Community Amid COVID-19 Pandemic
(Bar, California, Cannabis, China, Compliance, Consulting, Food, Growers, Packaging, Pesticide, United States, Vertically Integrated, Lights, Cultivation) Like many other states, California has deemed the cannabis industry an “essential” business that can remain operational during the state’s stay at home order aimed at slowing the spread of COVID-19. For Graham Farrar, the founder and CEO of Glass House Farms , a vertically integrated cannabis operator based in Santa Barbara, Calif., this means cannabis businesses must step up to help those in need during this difficult and uncertain time.“This is a time when we need everybody,” he told Cannabis Business Times. “If you’ve got a shovel, you need to get digging.”The way Farrar sees it, the industry gets to be the light in an otherwise bleak time, and this is a great opportunity for cannabis businesses to shatter old stereotypes and stigmas while giving back.“Sometimes you need help—and there have been a lot of people who have helped us along the way—and sometimes you get to be the helper,” he said. “We’re happy to return the favor to society and show how we can help out.”Photo courtesy...

Panic Buying May Not Save the Weed Industry, After All
(California, Canada, Cannabis, China, Colorado, Drinks, Edibles, Facilities, Growing, Loans, Nevada, Production, Products, Recreational, United States, Washington) Image via The regulated marijuana industry recently experienced record-breaking sales while everyone stocked up weed, but the heady hoarding triggered by COVID-19 lockdowns may not be enough to save pot businesses from a potential economic recession. Already, sales figures have slumped back down to their typical year-over-year numbers in some weed-legal states. According to data from the weed analytics firm Headset, sales spiked from March 15-16, just as the US began to (rightfully) freak out over the coronavirus pandemic. Sales then rapidly declined from March 17-19, with a slight uptick in sales on March 20, a Friday. “The response might mark a natural decline after consumers stocked up before sheltering in place,” wrote Maggie Cowee at MJBizDaily regarding last week’s figures, “or it could be the result of economic pressures from the pandemic, which has resulted in the closure of restaurants, gyms, ski resorts, and scores of other businesses, as well as the loss of thousands of...

Are You Ready for a Cannabis Shortage?
(ACB, Alcohol, Batteries, Canada, Cannabis, CGC, China, Edibles, Events, Facilities, Growers, Growing, Hemp, HEXO, Illinois, Investors, Legalization, Manufacturing, United States, Cultivation, Security) The COVID-19 pandemic could lead to cannabis shortage just when we need it most. Covid 19 affects everyone, but especially the vulnerable, such as those with already compromised immune systems. Many medicinal cannabis patients find themselves in this group, something that serves to underline the importance of preparedness for any supply shortages. Here are some tips to ensure you are ready to weather a potential cannabis shortage. Do You Already Have Your Cannabis Gear? Although the coronavirus doesn’t directly impact the cannabis industry, it does affect the all-important supply chain underpinning the global market that cannabis has become. As more people isolate themselves from normal life, cannabis consumption will likely increase. But supply-chain issues in China, where much of the manufacturing takes place, may well prove to be the biggest threat to supplies. Much of this relates to vape-related hardware, ninety to ninety-five percent of which originate in China but can also mean...

Coronavirus Is Killing Weed Legalization Bills Across the US
(Cannabis, China, France, Iran, Italy, Law, Legalization, Medical Marijuana, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Recreational, Spain, United States) As the COVID-19 pandemic consumes every waking — and sleeping — moment right now, marijuana legalization bills that had excellent chances at becoming law are instead getting shelved. State lawmakers across the US are suspending their legislative sessions for weeks or months to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, even as progressive states deem marijuana businesses as “essential services” alongside emergency responders and pharmacies amid the pandemic. Cannabis reform bills aren’t being singled out for delays, but rather they are no longer prioritized as states attempt to control the coronavirus crisis that threatens the lives of millions of at-risk individuals and the nation’s economy. Last week, New York State’s chances of making progress on its recreational legalization bill stalled as legislators scrambled to restructure the state’s budget to address coronavirus containment, diagnosis, and treatment. Of all US states, New York has reported the highest number of confirmed...

The Mexican Cartel Drug Trade Is Getting Wrecked by the Coronavirus Crisis
(Canada, Candy, Cannabis, China, Mexico, Products, Recreational, Synthetic, Pharmaceuticals) Drug dealers are about to experience hard times under the coronavirus lockdowns. For starters, Mexican cartels are getting hit in multiple black markets due to restrictions on international travel and trade to prevent the spread of COVID-19. One of those lucrative underground industries is fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid. But since most of the Americas’ illicit fentanyl supplies come from China, that means the trade and travel bans have cut the routes for smuggling fentanyl , too. As of March 5, Mexican authorities announced that “coronavirus had suspended the fentanyl supply chain” to one major cartel because its “partners in China... are unable to deliver the precursors,” wrote Chris Dalby for Business Insider . “In response, the source said the [Jalisco Cartel New Generation, or CJNG] may have to hike its prices and potentially lose clients to other competitors. In 2020, a wide range of criminal groups in Mexico has been contesting for the prized trafficking of fentanyl.”...

Well, the short answer is that until this event comes to a more stable point, volatility may remain extremely high. So with all of the large selloffs occurring in the market right now, what can we expect to occur in the next few weeks? Hand Sanitizer Made From Booze Exists, and Distilleries Are Giving It Away Free
(Alcohol, China, Containers, Georgia, Italy, North Carolina, United States) As Americans rightly freak out over the coronavirus pandemic, hand sanitizers made with rubbing alcohol have practically vanished from store shelves. Now, booze distilleries are making sanitizers with their own liquor, and, best of all, they’re giving them away for free. Commercial hand sanitizers capable of killing the COVID-19 virus must contain at least 70 percent rubbing alcohol , otherwise known as isopropanol. However, ethanol — the kind of alcohol that gets people drunk AF — can also kill the coronavirus, so long as it’s also mixed at 60 percent or more. On Thursday, Old Fourth Distillery in Atlanta began giving out hand sanitizer made from its distilled booze. Old Fourth specializes in making vodka from sugar cane, but given the current coronavirus crisis, the company sacrificed some of its ethanol by mixing it into aloe-vera-based sanitizer. The only catch: The company asked folks to bring their own containers to take the sanitizer back home, CNN reported. "Due to the recent...

Are Cannabis Stocks Worth Buying Right Now
(Cannabis, China, Facilities, Financing, Investing, Investment, Investments, Legalization, Loans, Management, Manufacturing, Media, Products, Stocks, Funding) Editors Note: This is a guest post by Maria Hills. The coronavirus has had a big impact on the world’s economy, and even more so on the financial cannabis market. While the S&P Index has seen a 17% drop, various marijuana companies have experienced a drop of 30% and more. Of course, this raises the question of whether it’s a good time to buy cannabis stocks right now, and if there’s any chance of finding a bargain. Covering Your Concerns There are a number of different reasons why cannabis stocks have been hit particularly hard due to coronavirus . One of the biggest reasons is because they’re a high stakes investment, to begin with – it’s still rare for a marijuana company to turn a comfortable profit. This is also despite the fact that many American states have legalized cannabis. Another issue around investing in cannabis stocks is financing. No matter what the end of the tunnel looks like with coronavirus, one thing’s for sure is that they’ll be less investment channeled into...

Some changes brought on by the novel virus might bolster the nascent hemp industry, but it could also bring additional challenges and obstacles for the nascent hemp industry. Here’s everything you need to know about how COVID-19 could or is already impacting the hemp industry. How Coronavirus is Affecting the International Cannabis Industry
(AbbVie Inc., Canada, Cannabis, China, Events, Germany, Greece, Illinois, Investors, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Production, Recreational, Spain, Switzerland, United States, Dispensaries, Funding) Frankfurt: Germany right now is not the worst place to be as a global pandemic closes borders and leads predictably to mass change overnight, which is unparalleled during peacetime. But it is still eerie. Berlin and Cologne are starting to close public spaces (like restaurants, bars and clubs). The grocery stores and pharmacies are still stocked and open however- it is a national priority. On Germany’s borders, Europe is closing in a way it has not since WWII. The EU is considering banning all non EU “foreigners” from entering the region for nonessential reasons for the next 30 days – albeit in an environment where leaders are also concerned about making sure supplies get through to those who need them. It also feels like wartime – only this time the “enemy” is a virus. It is called COVID-19, and it is spreading. It cannot be “stopped” although authorities are now doing everything they can to slow it down. At risk are not only populations but also vulnerable health care systems. The...

Hemp Versus Cotton: Which One is Best for The Environment and the Economy?
(Biofuel, California, Cannabis, China, Clothing, Egypt, Fertilizer, Fertilizers, Food, Hemp, India, Oils, Organic, Pesticide, Processing, Production, Synthetic, Texas, United States, Cultivation) Hemp versus cotton has a clear winner. Hemp versus cotton has been a historical battle for dominance. No plant generates such versatility and contention as the hemp plant . As a variety of cannabis plant, years of Prohibition have hindered our collective understanding of the myriad of sustainable uses that hemp can provide. Cultivation of the plant began as far back as 8000 BC in the Middle East and China, where its uses included textiles, ropes, fishnets, food, and cosmetic applications. In modern times, the use of this versatile crop even extends to biofuel, paper , and medicinal oils . Those years of Prohibition allowed cotton to gain a foothold in the west. Cotton is a fiber and food crop native to tropical and subtropical regions around the world. And like hemp, it’s also quite versatile. It’s widely used in the production of clothing, cooking oil, coffee filters, and cattle feed, among others. China is the largest cotton producer in the world, followed by India and the U.S.,...

Coronavirus Guidelines for the Cannabis Industry
(Antarctica, Cannabis, China, Regulations, Research, South Korea) The World Health Organization (WHO) recently recognized COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, a pandemic. What can cannabis businesses do to help reduce transmission? At the time of this writing, community transmission of COVID-19 has been observed in every continent except Antarctica. While China and South Korea are showing signs of containment, with negative disease growth rates, the rest of world is experiencing positive – and in some cases exponential – disease growth rates. Many companies in the cannabis industry are asking: what can we do to slow the spread of the virus and get ahead of the outbreak? By adopting sensible policies, businesses play a key role in reducing disease transmission. On March 13, 2020, The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), in collaboration with the WHO and New England Complex Systems Institute (NECSI), released Coronavirus Guidelines for Business, a summary of actions businesses can take to reduce immediate risks to employees...

Weed Sales Are Booming in LA, Thanks to Fears of Coronavirus Quarantine
(Beverage, California, Cannabis, China, Events, Manufacturing, New York, Products, United States, Dispensaries) Coronavirus may have a long-term negative impact on the US economy as a whole, but in the short term, anxieties about the virus are boosting sales for California's cannabis industry. In preparation for an eventual quarantine, people have flocked to supermarkets, stripping the shelves of toilet paper, pasta, and other necessities. In adult-use states, legal weed shops are also seeing their share of panic buying. Many Los Angeles pot retailers are reporting a spike in sales as customers stock up on extra weed to get them through this outbreak. "People are in scarcity mode. The streets are emptier, but specific businesses like grocery stores and dispensaries are seeing more people than usual — and people are stocking up and purchasing in bulk," said Steve Lilak, head of sales for California cannabis company NUG, to The Hollywood Reporter (THR) . "I've seen regular customers buying three or four of what they normally buy just one of in LA dispensaries." Sweet Flower, a dispensary with...

(Canada, Cannabis, China, Full Circle Capital Corporation, Germany, Greece, GW Pharmaceuticals plc, Hemp, Japan, Law, Legalization, Luxembourg, Madagascar, Management, Medical Marijuana, NASDAQ:FULL, Portugal, Regulations, Research, Science, United States, THC, Pharmaceuticals) The ancient history of cannabis is an unfinished rollercoaster journey to legalization. The ancient history of cannabis is a story of co-evolution. Brought up alongside mankind, it’s been with us for every step of our progress, from humanity’s first steps as hunter-gatherers to part-time plant cultivators all the way to the digital era. As humans made technological leaps, cannabis was there, too. Moving forward with dog-like companionship , slowly revealing its secrets along the way. Its rollercoaster journey from a wild weed of Asia to the one of the world’s longest used and most diverse medicinal substances is an interesting one. Cannabis helped usher in mankind’s first forays into natural medicine. It was one of the first plant-based cures abandoned and vilified in the pharmaceutical age. From savior to scourge and back again, cannabis exemplifies the sometimes-fraught relationship between humanity and nature. Humble Beginnings: The Ancient History of Cannabis Indigenous to the...

(Antarctica, California, Cannabis, China, Colorado, Events, Florida, France, Hawaii, Hemp, Israel, Research, South Korea, Tennessee, Texas, United States, Washington) Regardless of whether you think the coronavirus outbreak is the harbinger of the Apocalypse or just the latest example of mass hysteria, real-world fallout has followed the disease’s spread across the globe. The novel coronavirus phenomenon, otherwise known as SARS-CoV-2 (the virus itself) or COVID-19 (the illness caused by the virus), may not have killed as many people as the flu, but it hasn’t been around as long as the flu, either. As of this writing, there are at least 114,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus around the world, with cases across 80 countries and on all continents except Antarctica. Nearly 63,000 coronavirus patients have fully recovered from the illness, though 4,000 people have died from it. The US is one of the latest nations to report coronavirus cases. Right now, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimate there are about 423 confirmed cases in 35 states and 20 deaths — though officials at Cedars-Sinai, a non-profit hospital based in Los Angeles, suspect that...

Over the past few days, the continuing spread of the dangerous new coronavirus has driven the Bank of Canada and the U.S. Federal Reserve to slash interest rates, prompted airlines to project staggering losses, kneecapped oil prices, and sent stock and bond markets into pandemonium.Epidemiologists and public-health officers are racing to find answers to one of the biggest global health challenges since the SARS epidemic of 2003. While they do so, businesses are delaying investments, postponing expansion and putting off travel. Global economic growth could fall to 1 per cent this year, down from 2.6 per cent last year, the Institute for International Finance warned this week. If so, it would be the slowest growth since 2009.Some sectors are already badly wounded. Just two weeks ago, the International Air Transport Association had...
